Chapter 63 Tension Shift
Nira’s POV:
The moment Kade stepped in, the mood shifted.

Aven, Janice, and Elise all straightened, their earlier arrogance gone, replaced by something much closer to caution. “Mr. Howell,” they said almost in unison, respectful, careful.
Kade acknowledged them with a slight nod, nothing more.
Janice’s expression changed instantly. The smile she had been wearing disappeared, and the jealousy underneath showed without restraint.
Lyra stirred.
She had already sensed it too, that sharp hostility rolling off Janice’s wolf.
I glanced at her briefly, then steadied Lyra before she could react.
Janice forced a smile again, though it looked strained. “Nira, so you were meeting Mr. Howell? You could’ve just said something earlier. That way we wouldn’t have had that little misunderstanding.”
The words sounded harmless, but the tone wasn’t.
Elise shot me a glare right after, clearly assuming I had kept quiet on purpose, letting them go after me so I could turn the situation around with Kade’s presence.
That was exactly Janice’s style.
What surprised me was how easily Elise bought into it.
I let out a faint, amused breath and looked at Janice. “So what, you’re expecting him to clear his schedule with you in advance? Just so you can plan accordingly?”
Kade glanced at me, then followed my lead without hesitation. His voice turned cool, edged with quiet authority. “Since when did my whereabouts become something the Soren family gets to weigh in on?”
His gaze passed over Janice, and the pressure that followed was immediate, heavy enough to make the space feel tighter.
Janice’s face went pale. She shook her head quickly. “No, that’s not what I meant, I just—”

Aven stepped in before she could finish, positioning himself in front of her. “Mr. Howell, there’s no disrespect intended. She’s young and didn’t think it through.”
Kade didn’t respond to him. Instead, he looked at me.
“They’re apologizing to the wrong person.”
Aven paused for half a second, then pulled Janice forward. “Janice, apologize to Nira. You’re family. She won’t hold it against you.”
Janice’s eyes filled instantly. Tears gathered, then spilled over as if a switch had been flipped.
“I didn’t mean it,” she said between sobs, her voice breaking. “Nira, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said those things. I really didn’t mean anything by it. Please don’t be mad at me.”
She cried harder as she spoke, her shoulders trembling, like she was the one who had been wronged.
Elise stepped in right away, pulling Janice back. “You two are sisters. Nira, don’t you you’re pushing this too far?”
I hesitated for a moment.

Not because of Janice, but because of Elise’s connection to the Howell family. I considered whether it was worth letting it go.
Tessa didn’t hesitate.
She stepped forward, eyes flashing. “Are you serious right now? You started all of this, and now you’re blaming Nira? Do you even hear yourself?”
“Alright, that’s enough,” Zane said as he walked over, slipping between them with an easy, controlled presence. He frowned slightly. “We came here to hang out, not start drama.”
Tessa shot Elise one last look before backing off, clearly annoyed. She grabbed my wrist. “Come on, let’s go.”
Kade’s gaze lingered briefly on Aven and the others before he turned and followed us.
I noticed the tension in Aven’s expression when their eyes met. It wasn’t subtle.
“Briar, you’re up,” Zane called, shrugging off his jacket as he walked toward another lane. “Let’s see what you’ve got.”
I stayed off to the side, watching Tessa play.
