Chapter 79 Something Beneath
Kade’s POV:
What she said didn’t sit right with me.

It wasn’t just casual conversation. It felt deliberate, like she was nudging me toward something without saying it outright. A warning, maybe. Or a test.
I lowered my gaze, turning the glass slightly in my hand as I replayed her words in my head, Nira wasn’t what she looked like on the surface. A girl who had lost her wolf spirit shouldn’t carry herself with that kind of composure, that kind of precision.
There was something she wasn’t showing, and whatever it was, it ran deep.
By the time I looked up, she was already gone.
I stayed where I was for another moment, thinking it through, then pulled out my phone and called Jett.
“Put the Caulden deal on hold,” I said as soon as he picked up. “The nanobot thrombosis project, pause everything for now. I want a full internal review before we move another step forward.”
There was a brief pause on the line before he responded, “Understood.”
“And restart the investigation on Nira,” I added, my tone sharpening. “Double the team. I want everything.”
Nira’s POV:
Not long after I finished talking with Kade, Alden called me into his office.
The moment I stepped inside, I stopped. Damon was already there.
He was sitting comfortably on the couch like he belonged there, and the second he saw me, his entire demeanor shifted. His expression hardened, his posture straightened, and just like that, he slipped into the role he knew best, the Alpha of Blazeborn Pack, the father who expected to be obeyed without question.
“You leave for school and cut off all contact with your family?” he demanded, his voice sharp and unforgiving. “What exactly are you trying to pull? Or have you already forgotten who your father is?”
I closed the door behind me without rushing and walked over at my own pace before taking a seat across from him. I leaned back slightly, meeting his gaze without the slightest hint of concern.
“Mr. Soren,” I said evenly, “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
I held his eyes, steady and unapologetic. “Who exactly did I cut off? And more importantly, do any of you even have my number?” That question landed exactly where I expected it to.
Ever since I returned to the Soren estate, no one had bothered to ask for my contact information. Not a single one of them. Even the phone I used had come from Vera, not the family.
And without a wolf spirit. I didn’t carry the scent markers wolves relied on to track each other. Once I left for Howard Academy.

might as well have disappeared as far as they were concerned.

Damon froze for a fraction of a second, clearly not expecting that answer, before his expression darkened and his eyes sharpened.
“Watch your tone,” he snapped. “I’m your father.”
I almost laughed.
I was about to respond when Alden cut in before things escalated further.
“Nira, let’s keep this productive,” he said calmly. “If there’s something to discuss, let’s do it properly.”
Damon seized the opportunity immediately, his tone shifting as if the tension from a moment ago had never existed.
“She didn’t grow up with us,” he said with a sigh, directing the comment at Alden. “Her manners need work. I appreciate you taking the time to guide her.”
Then he turned back to me.
“I’m here to request a short leave for her,” he continued. “I’d like to take her home for a few days.”
“Of course,” Alden agreed without hesitation.
I didn’t like it, but I also knew this wasn’t something I could refuse outright. So I said nothing.
As I stood to leave, I glanced back at Alden. “I sent you the draft of the test paper. Take a look when you have time.”
His expression lit up instantly. “Already? That was fast. I’ll go through it as soon as I
I can.”
I gave him a small nod before following Damon out.
The moment I stepped into the Soren estate, it was obvious this wasn’t just a casual visit.
Everyone was already there, seated in the living room like they had been waiting for me.
