Chapter 211 Jet the Hero
Ambrose fired his gun.
The bullet hit the black shadow straight on.
A sharp cry cut through the air, and the dark figure fell to the ground.
“You got it, colonel! You hit it!” Rusty shouted from behind.

The soldier who had just been about to step through the door froze. His face turned pale as he stared at the thing on the floor.
It was a mutated parrot–bigger than a hawk, its feathers a smoky gray.
It was Jet. Caroline had left the parrot behind to guard the house.
One of Jet’s wings was bleeding badly. A small red puddle of blood was forming under him.
But still, he pushed himself up, eyes sharp like a falcon’s, glaring at the intruders.
He knew he was weak. He knew he was a coward.
When those soldiers tried to break in the door, he had only dared to attack from the shadows. Jet hid on top of the shoe rack, waiting for the right moment to strike. He couldn’t face them head–on.
Maybe that was why his human always took Raven out, but never him.
The last time she did, he’d been over the moon.
He’d followed every order, never made a sound outside.
But when that mutant cat appeared, he’d completely panicked.
Sure, he could scout and warn his human and Raven about danger, but he never had the courage to fight like Raven did.
He always hid behind Raven.
Since then, his human has never brought him out again.
Raven never made fun of him, though. He’d gently pat Jet on the back with his was still young.

And Jet was already three!
This time, his human had trusted him to guard the house. He had to do it. No matter what.
Dragging his injured wing, Jet stood tall.
He couldn’t fly anymore, but he could still block the doorway. No one would set foot inside.
This was his human’s and Raven’s trust in him, and he’d protect it with his life.
He puffed out his chest, glared at the intruders, and shouted, “Get the fuck out! You jerks!”
Jet was sure. His human would’ve yelled the same thing if she were here.
Ambrose stomped forward, furious, raising his pistol. “You little pest! You dare curse at me?”
Just as he was about to shoot, chaos broke out behind him.
Panicked screams filled the hallway, followed by bursts of gunfire.
Ambrose spun around and froze. A massive black head, with two glowing blue eyes, was charging straight at him.
It was a dog–jet–black, its face hidden in the dim light, and he couldn’t make it out.
The
eyes burned with a fury that sent chills through his body.
He lifted his gun, trying to aim at the dog.
Unlucky for him, the black dog was faster, lunging straight for his head.
“Colonel!”
Someone shouted in terror beside him.
Ambrose felt himself slammed to the ground.
His gun went off three times in a burst of panic.
A spray of blood poured over him, splattering across his face and draining his face.
His chest throbbed with pain, heavy as if a boulder was crushing him. For a moment, he felt numb all over. He couldn’t even tell what had happened.

His mind went blank.
When he finally wiped the blood from his eyes, he finally got a good look.
It wasn’t the creature that had tackled him; it was his soldier.

The man had thrown himself over Ambrose to shield him and had taken the hit. Now the soldier lay motionless, sprawled across his chest.
And on top of that body, like some nightmare come to life, stood a huge black dog. His fur sleek and shining, his muscles tight and packed with raw power.
A giant black dog was biting down on the dead soldier’s head, blood dripping down in thick, red lines.
Then he lifted his icy blue eyes toward Ambrose, staring at him the way a predator studies its
prey.
Ambrose’s heart nearly stopped. He tried to reach for his gun, but his arm was pinned beneath the
corpse. He couldn’t pull it out.
He realized, with horror, that the shots he had fired earlier had all hit his soldiers. None had touched the dog.
The black dog could only be Raven.
His icy blue eyes flicked toward Jet, who was crouched weakly on the ground, his wings drooping and trembling.
When Jet saw Raven, he blinked and let out a faint, hoarse call. “Raven … ”
Raven stared at him for a few seconds, silent but steady, as if to comfort him.
Then he opened his blood–stained jaws and spat out the human head he had been holding.
It rolled across the floor, leaving a dark red smear behind.
Raven’s mouth curled open into a crimson grin. He bared his gleaming white teeth and stared
at Ambrose.
