Rusty found his courage first. He stepped forward and pointed at Francis. “Colonel Sutton,” he said, “if you shelter the killer that murdered Colonel Lowland, our commander won’t let you get away with it.”

Francis snorted. “Nonsense. It was self–defense, got it? You came into people’s homes and made trouble. You came into our shelter and made trouble. This is my territory, not Ambrose’s.”

Rusty knew he couldn’t argue with Francis. He grabbed two fellow soldiers to stop them from arguing.

Then he darted his eyes and said through clenched teeth, “Colonel Sutton, we were following orders. If you have a problem, take it up with your commander or ours. Even if you kill us all here, word will spread about Colonel Lowland’s death. We were only doing what we were told. Orders are law. If you kill us, you will let those soldiers who follow you down.”
