Standing by the window, Caroline raised her binoculars and looked down. She couldn’t make out the face clearly through the snow–just that it belonged to a middle–aged man.

The whole thing felt strange. She went next door to ask Tyler if he had any enemies who could be behind

Tyler frowned, deep in thought.

Seeing that, Caroline couldn’t help thinking–What, too many enemies to keep track of?

After a moment, Tyler shook his head. “My enemies aren’t that dumb. They wouldn’t provoke the army. If they wanted me dead, they’d wait until I was outside. Whoever did this wanted the army to see it

According to Tyler, the people in Building B across the way could be ruled out–they had no reason to start trouble right now.

As for the rest of his enemies, none of them fit the kind of person who would do something like this. Caroline thought it through as well. The only ones she could call enemies were the Lowlands.

But the Lowlands were already scattered and broken–they could barely protect themselves.

Besides, she had no close friends or family left in this world. Even if someone wanted to make a statement, they wouldn’t do it by killing people just to frighten her.

Putting it all together, it seemed more likely that whoever was behind this was targeting the army.

Still, over the next few days, Caroline kept her eyes on the window, watching the snow–covered streets below.

And then, another day later, things got worse.

This time, both the front and the back of the building were lined with heads.

Two full rows.

More than 20 in total.

Each head was pierced through the neck with a long wooden pole, standing stiff in the wind and snow. A layer of frost had formed over their hair and faces, their eyes closed, expressions frozen in agony.

Some even showed signs of decay, their faces slowly rotting beneath the ice.

From the looks of it, those people had gone through something horrifying before they died. “Useless! All of you are useless!” Francis roared, his face red with anger. “I told you to keep watch–so what were you watching? Did these heads grow out of the ground?! Nobody saw who brought them?!”

Now, rumors were spreading through the shelter like wildfire. Some whispered that the people from the 66th floor had angered someone powerful and that ordinary folks were paying the price.

After all, Vincent’s earlier lies hadn’t been fully silenced yet.

And coincidentally–or maybe not–Caroline was the only one who actually saw what had happened.

She had been staying home these days.

The cold outside was unbearable. She knew that this extreme freeze wouldn’t last more than two weeks.

This apocalypse might be a little different from her past life, but the overall pattern was still the same.

She spent her days cooking dog food for Raven, organizing supplies, and watching a few shows.

But since she didn’t need much sleep anymore, she often stood by the window with her binoculars, looking outside.

Then one morning, just as dawn broke and sunlight spread a golden glow over the snow, Caroline lifted her binoculars to admire the view–and out of habit, glanced toward the apartment entrance.

What she saw next made her freeze.

One after another, more than a dozen human heads suddenly rose from the ground–like they had grown there.

Some of them even had clumps of snow on top at first, which shook loose as the heads moved slightly.

Then, fully intact faces appeared, cold and lifeless.

Caroline gasped, her heart skipping a beat.

She rushed to the back side of the building, grabbed her binoculars again, and peered down.

Two minutes later–she saw it happen again.

Another dozen or so human heads suddenly rose from the ground–just like that, appearing out of nowhere.

“Wait… could these heads really be growing out of the ground?” Caroline muttered under her breath. She thought for a moment, then decided she had to tell Francis.

When she reached the 40th floor, she could already hear shouting and crying coming from his office. Inside, someone was wailing.

It turned out that one of the people recognized a head among the pile–it was a family member. Someone who had been sent to work on the renovation project in the old buildings at the rear area.

An old woman cried, her voice breaking into sharp sobs. Soon, the cries turned into angry demands. She wanted the army to give an explanation–and compensation.

Francis’s face twisted in frustration, his temples throbbing.

Caroline glanced through the doorway, saw the chaos inside, and decided not to enter. She quietly pulled aside a soldier and told him what she’d seen.

About half an hour later, Francis came up to the 66th floor.

When Caroline stepped out to meet him, he scratched his head so hard that a few hairs came loose. “Caroline, are you saying you really saw those heads come up from the snow by themselves?”

Caroline nodded and described everything she had seen in detail, her expression still tense from the
