Chapter 286 Rear Area Had Fallen
Caroline had once suspected that the heads might have something to do with Building B. She’d even worried that, since the two buildings were so close, there might be conflict later on.
But over the past few days, even with Francis away from the shelter, people in Building B hadn’t caused any trouble for Building A.
On the fifth day after Francis’s departure, Alger suddenly came up to the 64th floor, his voice filled with urgency. “Caroline, could you come down for a moment? C–Colonel Sutton’s back.”
At that moment, Caroline had just finished dinner and was playing around with Jet and Raven at home.
Hearing that Francis was back, she was overjoyed.
But the trace of anxiety in Alger’s tone made her uneasy.
As she headed downstairs, she noticed that Tyler and Denton from next door were coming out too.
Apparently, Alger had called for them as well.
“By the way, Colonel Sutton told me to bring Silver along too. I’m not sure why,” Denton said puzzledly.
When they finally reached the lower floor, Caroline pushed open the door to the army office and froze.
Francis wasn’t standing.
He was lying on the bed, covered in blood.
His body was wrapped in multiple layers of bandages.
When he saw them, Francis managed a faint smile. “Ah, it’s good to see you guys. Honestly, I thought I wasn’t going to make it back this time.”
“Colonel Sutton, what happened to you?” Caroline asked.
Francis sighed, his eyes dim with exhaustion and grief.
“I could really use a cigarette right now…” he muttered.
Smoking had long been banned inside the shelter for fire safety reasons.
Some civilians still sneaked puffs in hidden corners, but as an officer, he had to set an example.
Seeing him like that, Caroline slipped her hand deep into her pocket. In truth, she was pulling something from her space storage. She took out a peach–flavored lollipop and held it out to him.
“Here. Have this instead.”
Francis’s eyes lit up, and he actually took it. “No way, are you treating me like a kid now? Caroline, you’re so nice!”
When children were sick, they always wanted something sweet. Caroline had acted on instinct.
But as Francis unwrapped the lollipop and popped it into his mouth, he felt a sharp glare from nearby.

He glanced around, but found no sign of enemies.
And so, Francis began telling the most horrifying story they’d ever heard while sucking on the lollipop.
The rear area had fallen.
None of the civilians who’d gone there for reconstruction, along with the five soldiers under his command survived.
When Francis first led his men to the rear area, he was fully prepared for a fierce battle with terrorists.
But what awaited them was an empty place.

There weren’t many buildings there to begin with, and after searching every room, they found no signs of struggle. However, all the stored food was gone.
Still, it didn’t look like a robbery for supplies.
Then one of the soldiers tripped over something buried in the snow…
Beneath the snow lay a mountain of corpses. Their bodies were stiff and their skin had turned bluish–purple. They were like human ice sculptures.
All of them shared one trait–none had heads.
Some still clutched their guns.
From their final postures, it looked like they’d died fighting.
A few civilians held knives. The blades were stained with blood and fur.
“That fur,” Francis said grimly, “belonged to rats.”
Caroline frowned.
Rats? But how could rats cut off human heads and leave them outside the buildings as warnings?
“We examined the bodies,” Francis went on. “At first, we thought their heads had been severed by weapons. But when we saw the fur on the knives, we understood. Those heads… were chewed off by rats.”
A chill ran through the room. Even Caroline and Tyler shuddered, while Denton rubbed his arm and grimaced.
“At first, we couldn’t find the rats. But once we realized mutant rats were behind it, we prepared ourselves. I didn’t expect my entire unit to be wiped out by them. How could one mutant rat cause that? Has the damn thing’s grown a brain now?”
It wasn’t until later that they saw a giant rat.
It was a huge white rat, roughly human–sized, crouching low to the ground.
Around it, countless other rats moved in eerie unison, obeying its every command.
Francis and his men fought desperately, killing hundreds of mutant rats, but were eventually forced back into a building.
They locked the doors and took turns keeping watch, preparing for another attack. But then, the rats stopped attacking.

For three long days, the men stayed inside, trapped and tense.
And during those three days, Francis watched in horror as the rats bred relentlessly.
They devoured the frozen human corpses, nested inside them, and gave birth to litter after litter of offspring.
