Chapter 306 These Rats Look Tasty
Eddie’s rat–skin had already been ripped off, revealing the frail body of a teenage boy underneath.

He was about 5’7“, with thinning hair and baggy clothes–blue and white, like a high school
uniform.
In the final moments of his life, he had finally returned to being just a regular kid again. Not the monster the apocalypse had turned him into.
Slowly, he collapsed, swallowed up by the swarming mass of rats.
Caroline and everyone else saw it happen.
Upstairs, the civilians who thought they had escaped began cheering loudly. Some of them even cursed at the boy–the rat king.
But Francis, Caroline, Tyler, and the others only let out a sigh of relief. None of them joined in the cheers.
The apocalypse had blurred all the lines. Everyone was a victim.
And to survive, sometimes victims became monsters. The ones who hadn’t turned into monsters had no choice but to take up arms and fight back–just to avoid becoming victims themselves.
At that moment, Denton was standing frozen on top of a boulder.
Because after killing Eddie, the rats had turned and surrounded him.
Clutching the whistle in his mouth, Denton felt every hair on his body stand on end as he saw all those eyes locked onto him.
After a long silence, he cried out in a choked voice, “Tyler … Tyler, why are these rats staring at me? I’m freaking out! Tyler, come get me! Aaaaahhhh!”
His pitiful scream echoed for miles.
Caroline couldn’t help but burst out laughing. Look at him. What a coward.
He was supposed to be the new rat king.
But after a brief panic, Denton quickly got used to the mutant rats‘ stares. He even started

eyeing a few of the fatter ones, then waved Tyler over and grinned. “Hey, Tyler, a couple of these guys are pretty chunky. Wanna catch one and roast it later?”
Caroline thought to herself–We wanted you to get used to being the rat king, not take it to the next level. Now he’s already treating those mutant rats like his personal emergency food supply?
Right now, the happiest person had to be Francis.
“Well, would you look at that, the army just happened to find a stash of supplies in a tight space we can’t get into. If these rats are trainable, that could be a total game–changer for us,” he said.
Francis started rubbing his hands excitedly, eyes shining, clearly already dreaming of a brighter future. He didn’t bother waiting for clearance–pushed right past his men, brought a few others along, even carried a little stove, and rushed over to meet up with Caroline and Tyler.
It was obvious that he already considered Tyler and Denton part of his crew now.
Now’s the time to knock Colonel Sutton down a peg or two. We’ve always kept things clearly separated. Just because the rat kid’s dead, doesn’t mean you get to swoop in and start claiming credit again, Caroline thought.
She had no intention of letting the army keep taking advantage of the situation.
The only reason she helped this time was because that teenage rat king had completely lost his moral compass, and if the army collapsed, she’d be caught in the fallout too.
Not to mention Building B. Until they figured out exactly what those people were up to, she still needed the army’s support.
“Colonel Sutton, you still haven’t paid out the profit from the canned food factory. Also, the medical supplies you promised haven’t been delivered either. And then there’s …” Caroline reminded coolly.
She didn’t even finish the sentence before a thin sheen of sweat started forming on Francis’s forehead, despite the freezing air. His face flushed red.
He stopped rubbing his hands and started looking around awkwardly, like he was trying to dodge the conversation.
After a moment, he finally said, “Ah, Caroline, give me just a few more days. I promise I’ll make everything right. You’ve got my word–100 percent. Things are only going to get better from here! You gotta believe in the strength of our great nation, don’t you?”

Caroline knew things had been rough lately. The cold was brutal, and the army was stretched thin.
Once the worst of the cold passed, their research would pick up speed, and they’d get stronger.
And when they did, she’d be the one cashing in.
Her share of the interest? Definitely coming in fat.
That’s when Tyler casually chimed in, “Colonel Sutton, our Denton went through a lot on this mission. The kid’s kinda … lost it a little. He’s been talking about eating rats.”
Francis blinked, clearly caught off guard by the turn in conversation. He had no idea how to respond; it was the kind of comment that didn’t follow any script.
Tyler kept going. “He’s only 17. If this were before the apocalypse, he wouldn’t even be legal yet. He’s just a kid. Sure, the mission was barely a success, but he’s clearly traumatized. He needs care and support. Maybe even therapy. And yet, here you are, ready to send a child to the front lines again? Tsk… how could you be so heartless?”
Francis stood there, totally stunned.
Wait a minute, weren’t you the one beating this same kid with a club thicker than a baseball bat just a little while ago? Now you’re suddenly all concerned and protective?
Meanwhile, there was Denton in the background, happily blowing on his whistle and testing out different commands–having the time of his life.
