Chapter 342: He’s Into You
Nelson’s vision was completely consumed—he couldn’t see Caroline, nor anyone else around him. His mind was flooded with swirling chemical formulas, flickering and morphing endlessly like a complex mental kaleidoscope. Then suddenly—
“Ah!”
Without any warning, a large hand grabbed hold of him and yanked him abruptly out of his mental reverie.
“Who the hell is this guy?!” Tyler’s voice cut through the tension, sharp and icy.
Caroline, who had been in the middle of rolling up Nelson’s sleeves, froze instantly. Her eyes lifted to find Tyler standing there, his expression calm but his brows furrowed in suspicion. His grip on Nelson’s collar was ironclad, unyielding.
Nelson’s face flushed a deep red; the pressure made it difficult for him to breathe.
Shaking off the daze, Nelson suddenly pulled out a syringe filled with a glowing green liquid and lunged to jab it at Tyler.
In an instant, the room erupted into chaos.
Five minutes later, the storm had calmed enough for everyone to settle down and talk.
Caroline took a deep breath and did her best to explain the situation—who Nelson was, why he was here. She also apologized to Tyler for not giving him a heads-up before bringing Nelson over.
Tyler simply shook his head. “It’s fine. I didn’t tell you before I brought Denton either. No need to make a big deal out of it.”
Caroline offered a small, grateful smile. “Thanks for being understanding.”
Tyler’s eyebrow twitched slightly at the word “thanks,” but he didn’t respond. Still, there was something about the way she remained so polite after everything that had just happened—it felt oddly uncomfortable.
He couldn’t quite put his finger on it, but a part of him wished Caroline would treat him differently, as if he wasn’t just another teammate. The feeling made no sense, and the more he dwelled on it, the more it irritated him.
Nelson, in contrast, barely reacted. Once he realized Tyler was on their side, he simply muttered a lazy “Oh,” without even glancing in Tyler’s direction.
Caroline noticed this and found it strange—Nelson had always been intensely curious about mercenaries before. But knowing Nelson’s unpredictable moods, she decided to let it slide.
She told Tyler he could head back first, but he declined, mentioning that a soldier was supposed to drop something off soon anyway. Noticing how exhausted Caroline looked after just returning, he urged her to get some rest.
Caroline pointed toward several mutant corpses the soldiers had recently delivered. “Then start with these. See what happens.”
She was about to leave when Nelson’s voice stopped her.
“You should be careful with Tyler.”
Caroline paused and turned around, surprised to see Nelson wearing an unusually serious expression.
She was about to reassure him that he was misreading the situation—that Tyler might seem cold, but he was a reliable teammate with no hidden agendas. She hoped Nelson would come to trust him as well.
But it turned out she was the one who misunderstood.
“When you got close to me, his eyes flicked to you for about 0.2 seconds and to me for 0.3 seconds—he was definitely watching us. When he looked at me, the muscles around his eyes tensed, and the corners of his mouth dropped slightly. That’s anger. But when he looked at you, his breathing became uneven, his eyes softened, and he looked almost helpless. Basically, he’s jealous—and a little frustrated that you haven’t noticed. In short, the guy’s into you. So, be careful.”
Nelson spoke with absolute conviction, because to him, anything involving love was a total enigma—a headache he couldn’t solve with science. He didn’t understand it, and the last thing he wanted was for Caroline, someone he was beginning to truly respect, to get tangled up in something as unpredictable and painful as love.
