Chapter 352: Blood and Air
“Stop! Halt right there, or I swear I’ll kill him!”
A sharp, commanding voice sliced through the pandemonium.
Caroline’s eyes darted upward. Nelson remained unconscious, limp in the woman’s grasp as she clutched him by the collar.
Despite being carried, he showed no sign of waking, lost in a deep, untroubled slumber.
He looked fragile, almost like a delicate sleeping beauty caught in a nightmare.
The woman pressed a cold blade firmly against Nelson’s throat.
“Take another life and I’ll kill your friend right here and now!” she warned fiercely.
Caroline’s brow furrowed with mounting concern.
She had been searching for Nelson, wondering where he had disappeared to in the chaos.
She hadn’t wanted to waste time on these enemies—her sole focus was to eliminate them all and find him.
But now, Nelson was a hostage.
Worse still, he remained unconscious, utterly vulnerable.
Jet and Raven ceased their attacks, swiftly moving to Caroline’s side.
Handsy spotted Nelson and attempted to lift part of his torso, writhing forward like a gnarled tree limb reaching out.
Caroline held Handsy firmly back. “Don’t move. I’ll get him out of this,” she assured him quietly.
Andy sneered, amusement flickering across his face. “Haha, not bad, huh? But what’s the point? Can you really survive this apocalypse alone? You’d be better off with me. Your friend’s in my hands. If you want him alive, kill those two bastards next to you—especially that bird!”
He laughed darkly, wiping away a scratch on his cheek where Jet had clawed him, his glare burning with genuine hatred toward the parrot.
Jet ruffled his feathers defiantly and let out a piercing cry that echoed through the room.
“Screw you, asshole!”
His voice was deep, resonant, causing everyone nearby to flinch.
“Bastard! Caroline, get rid of that bird or I’ll—”
His threat was cut short by a sudden, agonized scream from a woman behind them.
Nelson, who had been unconscious moments before, snapped awake.
Ignoring the blade pressed to his neck, he yanked a pair of metal tweezers from the table and plunged them straight into the woman’s eye.
She screamed in agony, clutching her face as she crumpled to the floor.
Nelson stood over her, a man seemingly risen from the depths of hell—tweezers clenched in his hand, his body splattered with blood.
But the blood was not hers—it was his own.
When he first regained consciousness, he realized a strange woman was holding him tightly. A wave of revulsion swept through him.
Glass bottles shattered throughout the lab under the sudden pressure.
“Back off! I’m warning you! I’ll unleash my full power!” Andy shouted, his voice trembling with strain.
Caroline raised a hand, signaling Raven and Jet to hold their ground. She had already figured it out—Andy’s ability only worked within a radius of about ten feet.
She didn’t fear him.
Caroline could manipulate the air around her as well, effortlessly blocking his attacks.
Yet, no matter how many times she struck, her blows couldn’t penetrate his invisible barrier.
The air he controlled was thick and impenetrable, like an unseen fortress.
Frustration bubbled inside her.
She clenched her jaw tightly, stomped her foot, and rolled up her sleeves with renewed resolve.
“Alright then,” she muttered under her breath. “Let’s do this my way.”
With a swift gesture, Caroline summoned the glowing Zero System interface before her eyes.
She scanned her list of abilities. After acquiring several new powers earlier, her total had climbed to nine.
Three of them flashed brightly on the screen, the latest randomly unlocked powers waiting for her to choose.
The battle was far from over.
