“Alright, I need to step out for a little while. We should make our exit from this shelter as soon as possible.”

The urgency in Nelson’s voice stirred everyone into immediate action.

Caroline would take the lead, venturing out first to establish the mobile base, her heart racing with anticipation and trepidation. Tyler was tasked with transporting Shane to a safe distance, his protective instincts kicking in. Meanwhile, Nelson decided to stay upstairs, seeking a moment of rest, knowing that the little ones needed watching. He felt a deep sense of responsibility; if anything were to happen to them—though he hoped it wouldn’t—he would rush to get Nelson.

With their roles clearly defined, Nelson prepared Shane for the journey ahead. He administered another shot, his hands steady despite the weight of the situation, before passing him over to Tyler.

Just as Caroline was about to leave, she turned to Nelson and offered him a cupcake—the same delightful flavor she had just given Shane.

Nelson, who had been feeling utterly drained and sluggish throughout the day, suddenly felt a spark of energy ignite within him. “Caroline, you’re incredible!” he exclaimed, a wide grin breaking across his face.

However, as she handed him the treat, Caroline sensed a gaze upon her from the side. Turning her head, she caught sight of Tyler.

He was observing her with an intensity that made her heart skip a beat. His expression was a strange blend of emotions, as if something flickered beneath the surface, something unspoken yet palpable.

Caroline brushed it aside, not wanting to dwell on it. Instead, she reached into her storage space, pulling out another cupcake, and extended it toward Tyler. “Here. You deserve one too.”

Tyler, burdened with Shane on his back and not particularly fond of sweets, felt an unexpected wave of jealousy wash over him. He hesitated, caught off guard by the gesture, unsure of how to respond.

Yet, after a brief moment, he accepted the cupcake. To Caroline’s surprise, he devoured it almost instantly, finishing it in just a few bites. “Yeah, it’s actually pretty good,” he admitted, a hint of surprise in his voice.

Caroline beamed at him, her heart warming at the sight. Of course, it was delicious. These cupcakes were practically a rare treasure. She had stocked up on them from her favorite bakery just before the world fell apart. Even in her storage space, only a few hundred remained, and the thought of the baker’s fate lingered in her mind. Each cupcake consumed was a reminder of what was lost, a piece of a world that seemed so far away now.

As Tyler and Caroline prepared to leave the shelter, a voice called out from behind them, halting their steps.

It was Alger, rushing towards them with an urgency that suggested he had been waiting in the hallway for their exit.

“Hey, guys,” he greeted, his brow furrowed with concern.

They paused, giving him their full attention. Alger quickly informed them that Nathaniel’s recovery needed to remain a secret for the time being. The team had decided to announce a funeral in three days, a somber plan that weighed heavily on all of them.

Understanding the gravity of the situation, Caroline and Tyler exchanged a knowing glance, silently agreeing to keep the information under wraps.

Alger’s frown deepened as he added, “And… if you go out during these days, be extra cautious. Everyone outside believes Commander Ball is dead. Things are about to get chaotic.”

She tore down the highway like a tempest, a wild gust of wind unbound.

Yet, the individuals attempting to follow her were not so fortunate.

The temperature outside had soared to a punishing 122°F, the heat oppressive enough to sap the strength of even the most determined.

Forget chasing Caroline; simply standing in that blistering heat could incapacitate anyone.

As Caroline sped miles ahead, her pursuers were nearing their breaking point. Without a vehicle or air-conditioning, they were left to suffer under the relentless sun, their legs straining against the unforgiving asphalt.

“Boss, we can’t keep going like this. We’re going to cook out here!” one man gasped, desperation creeping into his voice as he rode atop a mutant cat. He offered the creature a full bottle of water before gulping down some for himself.

The cat beneath him shifted uncomfortably, clearly agitated.

Even in normal times, cats were notoriously difficult to tame. Months of painstaking effort had gone into training these few mutant cats to serve as mounts.

If this heat persisted, there was a real chance the cats would throw their riders off and bolt for safety.

Their team was small, consisting of just three members: two men and one woman, all of whom were riding their mutant cats and feeling utterly miserable in the sweltering heat.
