In the eyes of the military, canned meat still held a certain value, a relic of a time when such luxuries were scarce. However, with the production lines humming back to life, it became less of a precious commodity and more of a weekly staple. Within the confines of the shelter, residents could now count on receiving two or three cans of meat each week, a welcome change from the grim days of deprivation.
Even in Francis’ shelter, the atmosphere had shifted. Food and water supplies were no longer a cause for concern, a stark contrast to the earlier days of scarcity and fear.
Yet, amidst this newfound abundance, two men stood out, their behavior strikingly different. They acted as though they hadn’t tasted real meat in what felt like an eternity, their eyes wide with a mix of hunger and longing.
Caroline, observing their peculiar demeanor, felt a sense of responsibility. She resolved to report their behavior to the military. If this trend continued, the gulf between the organized shelters and the scattered groups lurking outside would only grow wider. Such a disparity could eventually pose a threat to the military’s operations.
Or perhaps, she mused, it could become a bargaining chip. She could trade with those groups that stubbornly refused to fall under military control, leveraging this information for her own advantage.
With a sense of determination, Caroline decided she would pay a visit to the so-called “leader” at dawn. According to the men, this woman often met with ability users at that time—the most tranquil part of the morning when the world was still waking up.
As the sun lingered just below the horizon, she planned her approach carefully. She had to remember that she was the one seeking something; it was vital to maintain a peaceful demeanor.
With two hours still remaining before the first light of day, she mounted Raven and rode several miles away, distancing herself from the abandoned building where she had encountered the men. The last thing she wanted was for them to follow her once they had satisfied their hunger.
After ensuring that no one was on her tail and the area was devoid of any threats, she resumed her search.
There were no shopping malls in sight, only clusters of dilapidated apartment buildings stretching across the landscape.
This was precisely what she had hoped for. These crumbling structures were ripe for exploration.
Perhaps within their walls, she would uncover forgotten treasures: jewelry, antiques, or even raw gold ore—anything that could enhance her storage capabilities.
At the very least, she thought, she could eradicate a few hundred mutant cockroaches. That would still be a more productive use of her time than sitting idly by.
Releasing her gray drone once more, she watched as it glided ahead, its sensors scanning the surroundings with precision.
Sure enough, inside one of the forsaken apartments, she stumbled upon a sizable chunk of raw gold ore, pulsing with energy and ready to feed her storage space.
In another unit, she discovered a bracelet, carelessly tucked away deep in a cabinet. While its craftsmanship was nothing to write home about, the energy it contained was more than sufficient.
Every home she explored bore the scars of neglect, ransacked more times than she could count.
Some rooms still held the twisted forms of corpses, sprawled across the floor in an eerie stillness.
Caroline’s brow furrowed in confusion. Surrounded? That couldn’t possibly be right.
She had meticulously erased her tracks and evaded those men entirely. Who could have discovered her now?
Unbeknownst to her, her pursuers were not human.
They were mutant animals.
Even before the world had crumbled, these beasts had ruled the suburbs, terrorizing pets and attacking unsuspecting individuals.
In the aftermath of the collapse, they had evolved into cunning predators, fierce and relentless.
The neighborhood she had wandered into was their territory, chosen as their nesting ground right after they emerged from hibernation with the onset of the great heat.
When she had ridden through on Raven, her presence had disturbed their slumber, awakening them from their deep sleep.
Now, they were gathering in the distance, perhaps a hundred yards away, tightening their circle around her like a noose.
A hot gust of wind swept by, carrying with it a foul stench. Raven’s lips curled back in a low growl, teeth bared in a warning. The wind had brought the unmistakable scent of their hunters, and the danger was closing in fast.
