Early that morning, the army had already sent patrol teams out to scout the area. They couldn’t get more than about 150 feet beyond the base. Mutated creatures kept charging out of the storm at random. It was extremely dangerous.

Visibility was very low. Mutated creatures were active nearby, and even sound didn’t travel well in the storm. Because of this, the base command decided that for the next few days, everyone should stay inside as much as possible. They would wait until the sandstorm passed before moving again.

If the sandstorm didn’t clear, the army planned to look for other solutions. For now, the order was simple and strict. No one leaves the base. Kay was currently in active service, so she followed orders without question.

Based on current readings, the sandstorm covered an area of several dozen miles.

Beyond that range, nothing could be measured.

The army tried to contact the outside world, but all communications seemed to be destroyed. Radio signals wouldn’t go out at all.

At this moment, the army base felt like an island.

A lonely island, trapped in a sea of raging sand.

Caroline told Kay about what Tyler and the others had discovered earlier. Kay found it strange too, but when she heard that both Tyler and Denton failed to locate the creature and that a tornado had even appeared, she quickly lost any desire to try it herself.

She agreed with Caroline. It was better to wait and see if the creature would run out of energy on its own.

Caroline then asked about Matt and Kay’s mother. Kay sneered at this.

Later, I beat him up again, she said flatly. Threatened him, pressured him, and even used that mask of yours. He finally told the truth.

It turned out that neither Kay’s mother nor her cousin Bonnie was dead. They had both been driven away by Matt.

Matt had teamed up with another woman to pretend to be Bonnie whenever supplies were checked, taking. Bonnie’s share for herself.

That woman was actually a criminal who broke out of the jail.

After the apocalypse, social order had collapsed, but the army still kept a close eye on known criminals. They didn’t want trouble inside the shelters.

What Matt said about writing letters to the army was partly true. At one point, both Matt and the woman caused trouble. She was arrested.

After learning Kay had joined the army, Matt tried to get Kay to help them. He asked someone to deliver a

letter to the front lines.

The messenger died on the way. Kay never received any letter.

Now that Kay was back, Matt knew that woman wouldn’t be returning anytime soon. Even if she did, he wouldn’t be able to explain why she wasn’t Bonnic. So he claimed Bonnie was dead and tried to bully Kay into giving him supplies.

At the same time, he was covering up the truth that Bonnie and Kay’s mother had both left on their own.

Matt was a jerk. When Kay’s mother was still around, he used the excuse that she was living under someone else’s roof to steal her supplies again and again.

After they moved to the shelter, Kay’s mother and Bonnie both went out to work. Matt, however, was lazy. He ate well, did nothing, and kept saying he was the only son and needed to pass down the family line.

He even tried to force Bonnie into prostitution.

When Kay’s mother finally couldn’t take it anymore and fell out with Matt, he tried to hand her over to a violent gang inside the shelter.

Kay looked a lot like her mother. Her face and figure were almost the same.

Kay’s mother was already in her forties, but she looked like she was in her early thirties. Time and the apocalypse had left marks on her, but they couldn’t hide her beauty.

She had practiced yoga for years and had once been a dance instructor. Her posture and figure were remarkable.

From behind, people often mistook her for a woman in her twenties. Even when she tried to hide herself

-wearing old, loose clothes and always keeping a hat onpeople still coveted her.

My mother and Bonnie ran away overnight,Kay said quietly. That was before they ever reached the base. Neither of them has any special abilities. I don’t know if they’re alive or dead. But at least there’s no clear proof that they died. I consider this as good news. Once the sandstorm ends, I want to apply to the army and go look for them.

Kay’s expression was complicatedfull of worry but also hope.

Two women without abilities, leaving a shelter alone, had almost no chance in the apocalypse.

Still, as Kay said, no confirmed death meant hope remained.

Caroline gently patted Kay on the back. When the time comes, we’ll help you ask around too. Tell me their names and what they look like.”

Kay looked at Caroline with gratitude and nodded softly. Thank you, Caroline. That really means a lot.”

No need to thank me,” Caroline said with a small smile.

Caroline had saved Kay at the beginning. Later on, Kay had helped her more times than she could count.
