Chapter 111

Hope’s POV

The celebrations and interviews were still ongoing when I went up to Margaret’s office. I should add teleportation to her list of skills, too, because I was sure she had still been at the tunnel. I had walked right past her, but somehow she was already here-standing right before me as though she had never left.

“You’re making the right choice,” she said.

I gulped, forcing myself to keep the tears at bay.

Young Hope would be proud of this moment for not bursting into tears right away.

But another part of me whispered that young Hope would have fought for everything-for her dream of becoming a physical therapist and for Levi, the man who made her heart race, the man who made her believe that impossible things could somehow happen.

She pushed two items toward me-a folded piece of paper and a stack tucked inside an envelope.

I frowned and leaned forward. I grabbed the folded paper first and carefully opened it. The moment I saw the heading, I bit my lip hard.

It was a resignation letter, already printed and customized for me.

‘I am writing this to express my intent to resign from the team as their physical therapist due to conflict of schedule and interest…’

It was a generic resignation letter, but at the very end, my name had already been printed.

‘Sincerely,

Hope Henderson’

“Just sign it. I’ll fast-track everything,” she said with a smile.

“Oh, and you don’t need to come back here to get your items. I already had someone clear everything out for you.”

My eyes narrowed.

“You had really prepared for this, haven’t you?”

“Of course.” She smiled without a hint of shame. “I’m Margaret Tundra. What am I if not cruel and prepared?”

I ignored her and pointed to the stack inside the envelope.

“And what’s this?”

She smiled again.

“Well, I didn’t think you would agree right away. I thought you’d be a little more selfish and want Levi all to yourself. After all, most people want to use Levi.”

“So, this is a small reward for going through with my plan.”

I frowned and picked up the stack. The moment I recognized what it was, my gaze darkened, and I immediately placed it back on the table.

The thought of holding onto it for even another second disgusted me.

“I’m not taking your money,” I told her, my voice firm despite the ache building inside my chest.

Her eyebrows rose.

“Well, it seems you’re even more selfless and stupid than I thought.”

She chuckled.

“People like you only come once in a while, so think of yourself as special.”

She paused, letting the words sink in before delivering the final blow.

“Just not special enough to be with Levi Reeve.”

The words landed exactly where she intended them to. Without saying another word, I reached for the pen on her desk.

“Wait, that’s my favorite pen. I don’t let anyone just use-”

I didn’t even let her finish.

I clicked the pen open and lowered it onto the paper.

Hope Henderson.

With every stroke of ink, it felt like I was signing a deal with the devil.

It felt like I was giving away a future I had only just started believing in.

A future filled with early mornings treating sore muscles, loud practices, stolen glances across the rink, and Levi’s bright smile waiting for me after training.

A future where maybe.. I could have had both.

But deep inside, I had already made up my mind.

This was the best thing for Levi.

And if I truly loved him…

Then maybe loving him meant letting him go.

I pushed the paper toward Margaret, swallowing the painful lump in my throat once again.

The tears burned fiercely behind my eyes, begging to fall.

I refused to let them.

Not yet.

With that, I stood from my chair, the legs scraping loudly against the floor.

“Are we done here?”

“We are,” Margaret answered, her smile as wide and merciless as ever.

“Thank you for your speedy cooperation.”

She leaned back comfortably.

“A taxi is waiting to take you to your accommodation, just so you can cry comfortably on your way home.”

I swallowed hard.

She had even arranged that.

It seemed she had known from the very beginning that I would agree. That there had never really been another ending for

“Wait,” she suddenly called.

“Does Levi know where you live?”

“He does,” I answered quietly.

I suggest you lay low for a while,” she said. “If he comes looking for you, you know what it would do to him, right?”

She tilted her head.

“It would only serve as a huge distraction.”

I bit my lip and slowly turned away because I honestly felt like I couldn’t hold back my tears anymore.

I was at my limit.

“Don’t tell him what happened here,” she continued.

“It would be for the best.”

I nodded.

“Got it.”

Those were the only two words I managed to say.

Anything more, and my voice would crack and the tears would give me away,

“Oh, and don’t even think about saying goodbye.”

“You’d only be hurting yourself, Hope.”

She smiled as though she were offering me kindness instead of cruelty.

“In the end, you were only here for a couple of months.”

“The boys will forget about you,”

That did it.

A tear escaped despite everything.
