“There’s the man of the hour! No, the man of the evening. The man of the fucking season!” Scott exclaimed the moment he saw me, while Spencer made cheering sounds in the background.

I sighed and shook my head. “You’re already drunk?”

“Who? Who’s drunk?” he asked, looking around with confusion.

We were currently at a private bar, one Desmond had rented in order to celebrate our win. I wasn’t supposed to go, especially since I had to leave early in the morning.

However, Desmond called me and went on about team spirit and all of that. That, and he threatened to come pick me up himself and pester me all night if I didn’t show up.

Granted, coming here for an hour would be better than dealing with that. I had called Hope to tell her I was going, and she simply told me to have fun and be careful.

Was I crazy for wanting her to stop me from going?

Or for her to feel at least a little jealous?

I shook my head. Hope had a very pure heart. She trusted me completely, and she wasn’t the type to let jealousy get the better of her.

I pushed the twins away as they tried to hug me and went inside. However, the moment I stepped through the doors, it became even louder.

People immediately began shouting my name. Some of them I didn’t even recognize.

I cursed under my breath.

“There you are! I was just about to pick you up.”

I turned around and found Desmond with a playful smile on his lips. Next to him stood a tall woman with dark hair, looking at me with bright, eager eyes.

“You said it was just the team.”

“Yeah,” he said. “Just the team, the staff, some of the staff’s friends… oh, and some of the team’s friends.”

I massaged the bridge of my nose.

What else did I honestly expect from him?

“Oh, this is Roxanne, by the way. She says she’s a big fan.”

“Hi, Levi,” she said, giving me a shy wave.

I simply gave her a polite nod before excusing myself to look for a quieter place.

My eyes wandered around the room until I spotted Lia sitting alone in the corner, sipping what looked like juice. She was wearing her signature sweatshirt and sweatpants, her hair tied high in a bun. She looked out of place among the loud music, flashy clothes, and drunken laughter.

And that was exactly what I needed.

Without hesitation, I walked over to her. Lia was nice, and for some reason, I always felt lighter around her.

However, today she seemed a little down.

“Hey,” I said as I took the seat beside her. “You alright?”

“Oh, Levi,” she said, visibly brightening. “You actually came? I’m surprised. Good job at the game, by the way. You broke a lot of eardrums… and a lot of records.”

“Thanks,” I chuckled. “I’m surprised you came here too.”

“Yeah,” she muttered.

“You alright?”

“Hmm? Oh… yeah. I just didn’t think there would be this many people.”

“Me too,” I sighed. “Desmond’s a menace, really.”

“Did he tell you it’d just be you and him too?”,

“What? No. He told me it would just be the team.”

“Oh.”

She looked even more disappointed for a brief second before quickly shaking her head and forcing a smile.

“Well, I’m glad you’re here. At least I get to talk to someone sober. The others are already drunk.”

“Well, they’re happy.”

“You look happy too,” she suddenly said.

I turned to her and found nothing but genuine joy and sincerity in her eyes.

“I’m guessing it’s because of Hope.”

“It is,” I answered without hesitation, making her smile even wider. “I’m heading back tomorrow morning just

to see her.”

“Aghh, I’m jealous,” she said with a laugh, though the smile never left her face. “Not of Hope, of course. Of the two of you. You just… bring out the best in each other. Don’t misunderstand.”

I chuckled.

“No misunderstanding here. How about you? You have your eye on someone?”

Lia had been working here around the same time I started, and I didn’t think she’d ever mentioned being in a relationship.

Her cheeks turned noticeably red, and she quickly shook her head.

“Nope,” she said. “I’m fine as I am.”

Just then, our conversation was interrupted when Desmond plopped himself between us.

“What are we talking about?”

I sighed and glanced at my watch.

“I’m leaving in thirty minutes.”

“What?” he exclaimed. “But the night’s still young, and the party’s only getting started!”

“Right, Lia?” he asked, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and pulling her closer.

Lia’s face was still red, so I wondered if it was just hot in here.

Well, it probably was.

She was wearing a sweatshirt, after all.

“You still haven’t had a drink yet,” Desmond added.

“I don’t want to drink. You know I don’t drink that much.”

“Right, right. Because the only flaw Levi Reeve has is that he’s a lightweight.”

I pursed my lips.

I couldn’t exactly argue with that.

Alcohol and I didn’t get along very well. One drink was usually enough to make me sleepy, and any more than that was asking for trouble.

“Don’t worry,” he said before suddenly standing and heading toward the bar.

A moment later, he came back carrying a bottle.

“This one’s non-alcoholic. At least try this one. It’d be a shame for you to leave right away.”

“I’m heading out early in the morning, Desmond.”
