Rainwater dripped from the tips of Grant's hair, splattering onto his expensive, handcrafted leather shoes and blooming into dark stains.
He stood in the sprawling courtyard, his gaze fixed intensely on the direction where Lucas's car had disappeared, until the last crimson glow of its taillights was swallowed completely by the endless night.
"Grant..."
Lyla's voice drifted from behind him, laced with a cautious, probing tone.
She walked up to him with an umbrella, attempting to link her arm through his, but the forbidding aura radiating from him made her pull back.
Grant didn't turn around, nor did he flinch.
His body was as rigid as a stone statue, the barely perceptible rise and fall of his chest the only proof he was still breathing.
Lucas's eyes, brimming with monstrous hatred, and his threat of "I'll make you pay with your life" echoed in his mind like a twisted curse.
Pay with his life?
Why should he?
The child in that woman's belly was Lucas's bastard anyway.
She was the one without shame, ruining her own body just to put on a performance. And now that something had happened, it was somehow his fault?
Absurd!
A surge of irrational anger flared in his chest, instantly incinerating the momentary hollow panic he had just felt.
"She won't die."
Grant finally spoke, his voice grating and raspy, every word dripping with biting cold.
"It's just an act, trying to use a pity play to force me to surrender."
Lyla's suspended heart finally dropped back into place.
She had been terrified that Grant would soften. As long as he believed Sienna was acting, she still had a chance.
"Exactly," she quickly agreed, keeping her voice sweet and soft. "Sienna is just so unreasonable. If she had something to say, she could have just communicated properly instead of hurting herself like this..."
"You were just looking out for her, Grant. You didn't want her getting played by some side-piece out there."
As she spoke, she stealthily observed Grant's expression.
