"Then get some sleep. I'll wake you when we get to the hotel," Lucas said, pulling her other hand into his grasp to warm it as well.
He was always like this.
He never pressed her about the past she refused to acknowledge, yet he always found the most thoughtful ways to soothe her chaotic heart.
For the past three years, he had watched her claw her way out of the abyss, watching her build an impenetrable fortress around herself with brushes and paint.
He knew better than anyone that the fortress, while seemingly indestructible, still bore unhealed fractures hidden in its darkest corners.
And Grant was the deepest, ugliest fracture of all.
By the time the car pulled into the hotel's underground garage, Sienna was fast asleep.
Lucas didn't wake her. He just sat there, tracing the line of her resting lashes, watching her for a long time.
Barney tactfully killed the interior lights, pretending he saw absolutely nothing.
Sometime later, Sienna furrowed her brow and opened her eyes.
"Are we here?" She sat up, her voice still thick with sleep.
"We're here." Lucas stepped out first, circling to her side to pull the door open and offer his hand.
The two walked into the hotel together, riding the elevator all the way to the penthouse suite.
Sienna swiped her keycard, and Lucas effortlessly caught her discarded blazer, hanging it by the entryway.
She walked over to the vanity, reaching up to unfasten the elaborate diamond necklace resting against her collarbone.
To maximize the dazzle, the sponsor had designed the clasp to be absurdly delicate, and it had managed to tangle itself in several strands of her hair.
Sienna fumbled with it a few times, only succeeding in painfully pulling her hair, causing her to wince in frustration.
"Don't move, let me," Lucas's voice drifted from behind.
He stepped up, standing just behind her chair.
In the mirror, the tall man leaned in slightly, their figures overlapping in the warm, golden glow of the lights.
Lucas's long fingers swept her heavy hair aside, revealing the elegant curve of her neck. His fingertips were searingly warm, occasionally brushing against her cool skin, sending a subtle shiver down her spine.
Sienna tensed slightly, watching him through the reflection.
Lucas was incredibly focused, his eyes cast down as he patiently unknotted the tangled strands.
Suddenly, she found herself completely captivated.
