Lucas crouched down. Without touching the wound, he gently brushed her pant leg up just enough to get a better look.
“What happened here?”
“It's just a dog bite.” Sienna pulled her foot back slightly. “It's not serious.”
Lucas stood up to face her. His features were sharp, his expression not overtly angry, but clearly not joking either.
“Did you get a rabies shot?”
Sienna remained silent, a flash of guilt crossing her face.
“Sienna,” he said sternly. “Rabies is one hundred percent fatal. Don't you know that?”
In all his years, he had never met someone so recklessly dismissive of her own wellbeing.
She was already gravely ill, someone had slapped her face into a swollen mess, and now she was walking around with a dog bite.
Did she really have a death wish?
“The dog was vaccinated.”
“Are you sure? Did you verify the paperwork yourself?”
Sienna couldn't answer; she honestly wasn't sure.
Lucas stood tall and pulled his car keys from his pocket.
“When did it happen?”
Sienna subconsciously blurted out the truth. “Yesterday...”
“Let's go. To the hospital.”
“You really don't have to...”
“The first twenty-four hours are the critical window. You've already put this off for a whole day.”
There was no room for argument in his tone. It wasn't an order, but rather the statement of an absolute, unchangeable fact.
Sienna looked at him, wanting to decline, but the moment she met his unwavering gaze, the rejection died in her throat.
It had been so long since someone genuinely cared about her wellbeing.
She wasn't used to it.
“...Alright.”
Lucas's car was parked around the corner. Once inside, he didn't say much. He simply reclined her passenger seat slightly and adjusted the air vents so they wouldn't blow directly on her.
The hospital wasn't far; they arrived in fifteen minutes.
By the time she finished her treatment, the sun had already set.
Lucas pulled up outside the Gauthier estate. Putting the car in park, he turned to her. “Disinfect the wound every day and keep it dry. You need your second shot on day three. I'll send someone to pick you up.”
“I can manage on my own. You don't need to trouble yourself.”
Lucas knew she'd probably forget, but as a man, constantly showing up at her house could spark unnecessary misunderstandings.
Grant stood up from the sofa and closed the distance between them. The floor lamp cast long shadows across his face, making his tight, furious jawline look even sharper.
“How else would I discover your true colors?” His voice was ice-cold. “You always played the pure, devoted wife, but behind my back, you're quite the player.”
Sienna never expected him to think so lowly of her.
After years of giving him everything, he didn't even grant her a single chance to explain before passing a permanent sentence.
“I'm exhausted. If that's all, I'm going to bed.”
She turned to leave.
Grant grabbed her wrist with terrifying force. Sienna winced as the bones in her wrist ground together in pain.
“Let go.”
Grant didn't release his grip. Instead, he gritted his teeth, spitting out every word. “You're pregnant, yet you have zero shame? You really couldn't handle being lonely for five minutes?”
Pregnant?
The word pierced her chest like a rusted needle, slow and agonizing.
Sienna's breath hitched, a suffocating wave of despair rushing up to sting her eyes.
She had almost forgotten that Grant still didn't know the baby was gone.
Seeing her silence, Grant finally unleashed the question that had been eating him alive.
“Or is it because this baby isn't even mine?!”
