He Came Back Running (Maya and Mason) novel Chapter 131

Chapter 131

Alex’s POV

The next day…

My father started talking before the room had fully settled.

“I acted on information I believed to be credible,” he said. The reasonable voice. The one he used when he had decided the best defence was to frame what had happened as a rational response to available data. “The situation was unclear. The reputation implications were real. Any responsible person in my position would have sought…

“Stop,” I said.

He stopped

The room… Catherine, Olive, Rivaldi still at the table, Maya in the chair with the two documents in front of her. held itself.

“You didn’t act on information,” I said. “You received a fabricated document from a woman you invited into this house without telling me, planted through your office to arrive alongside the real result, designed to create doubt about the mother of my child the day before my wedding.” I kept my voice level. The flat version. “That’s not responsible. That’s interference.”

“I didn’t know it was fabricated…..”

“You should have known,” I said. “Because I told you. Repeatedly. That I trusted her. That the situation was not what you believed it was. That your involvement was causing damage.” I held his gaze. “You chose not to hear it”

He looked at the table.

“I was protecting the family…..”

“You were protecting an idea you had about what the family should look like,” I said. “Those are different things.”

Catherine had moved to the armchair near the window. Olive was standing beside the bookcase. Neither of them spoke

My father looked up.

“You’ve been blinded since the moment she walked back into your life,” he said. “I watched it happen. The judgment you usually bring to everything…. gone. The caution, the assessment….”

“The woman I’m marrying tomorrow built a company from nothing in eight weeks while being threatened, followed, and lied about,” I said. “She activated a legal trust that was built to protect her from exactly the people who tried to use it against her. She identified a conspiracy connected to her father’s death that three separate investigators had missed.” I paused

“That’s not someone I’m blind about. That’s someone I’m seeing very clearly.”

“She has been the centre of chaos since the moment..,”

“The chaos comes from the people around her,” I said. “From Mason, who cannot accept losing. From you, who invited Zara to this house and gave her access to channels she used for manipulation.” I looked at him directly

The room went very still

My father’s expression shifted.

He looked at the table.

At the two documents…. the real result and the manufactured one, side by side.

“I love you,” he said. Not in the performative way. In the specific, uncomfortable way of a man for whom the words were true and insufficient simultaneously. “I have always been trying to protect what I love.”

“I know,” I said.

“Then understand that what I did came from that”

“I understand it came from that,” I said. “And I’m telling you that it doesn’t matter where it came from. The result is the same.” I kept my voice even. “You gave a woman who has been trying to remove Maya from my life access to our family’s channels. You participated in an action that produced a manufactured doubt about mychild on the eve of my wedding. And you have spent the past two weeks making the woman I love feel like she was on trial for the crime of existing in my life.”

He was quiet.

The harbour was visible through the window behind him

Grey. Still.

“She’s going to be my wife tomorrow,” I said. “She is already the mother of my child. She is the person I chose, clearly and without confusion, years before you had any opinion about it.” I held his gaze. “I need you to decide tonight whether you can stand in the same room as that truth and accept it.”

“Alex…..”

“Because if you can’t,” I said, “then I need you to tell me that now. Tonight. So I can make my own decision about tomorrow”

The room was absolutely still.

My father looked at me again….

At the expression on my face, which was not anger……. anger had burned through in the first two minutes. What remained was simply the fact of it, and my willingness to hold it.

“If you cannot respect the woman I love,” I said, “then don’t stand beside me at my wedding tomorrow.”

Maya had not moved….

She was in the chair with her hands in her lap, the composure on, but the version that was present rather than performed….. the one that carried the weight of the past week without collapsing under it.

I crossed to her

Sat beside her.

She looked at me with the expression she wore when she had processed everything available and was waiting for what came next.

“Are you all right?” I said

She looked at the table.

At the two documents

At the ring on her hand.

“Ásk me tomorrow,” she said.

I looked at her.

“After the wedding,” she said. “Ask me then”

I held her gaze.

“All right,” I said.

My father, from the armchair, said nothing.

But he was still in the room.

And when I looked at him, the expression he wore was not the cold certainty of a man who had decided he was right.

It was the expression of someone who was…. for the first time in a long time, sitting with the possibility that he was wrong.
