Chapter 239

Mason’s POV

My phone vibrated before I had finished the second page.

Her number…

I set the file down and answered.

“It’s going better than expected,” she said.

“Tell me,” I said.

“She tells me things,” she said. “Little things…. what she’s eating, how the pregnancy is going, what the twins are doing that week according to the last scan. She doesn’t share anything sensitive yet. But the little things are the beginning.” A pause. “She’s stopped checking the card.”

“What do you mean?” I said.

“When we first started spending time together, I could tell she was cautious. There was a quality to some of her questions…. the way she’d ask about my background, my clients, my niece.” The line shifted, quieter. “She’s stopped asking that way. She just asks because she wants to know.”

“Good,” I said.

“Keep earning her trust,” I said. “Never rush her. The best lies are hidden inside genuine kindness.”

A pause

“I know,” she said.

She ended the call.

The second layer of the plan.

The woman was the first layer… Maya’s confidence, approached from the personal side, through the friendship that was becoming real in the uncomfortable way that plans sometimes became real when the people involved were too good at their jobs.

She was good at her job.

The Hale Group was the second layer.

A corporate entity that existed at the intersection of Voss Maritime’s expansion plans and a market position that created legitimate friction of a professional relationship requiring management.

The kind of friction that produced, if applied correctly, the pressure that Mason had described to Zara… the work, the media, the family, all pulling in different directions while the ground beneath the relationship shifted incrementally.

Hale Group was the work component.

And the woman was already in position for the next step.

The next morning.

Voss Maritime’s interview schedule had been running for two weeks….. the standard, necessary process of filling

the positions that had accumulated during Alex’s absence and the reorganisation that followed his return. Legitimate positions. Legitimate candidates.

She was one of eleven scheduled for that afternoon.

I knew because the scheduling had been managed through a channel I had access to…. not directly, through the remove of a professional relationship that was itself legitimate, which was the architecture of everything I had been building.

Nothing traceable.

Nothing that required fabrication.

The résumé had been built across eight months….. actual positions, actual deliverables, actual references who would confirm what they confirmed because what they confirmed was true. I had been patient about this. The groundwork had begun before I had fully articulated the plan to myself, which was the kind of preparation that looked like luck from the outside and was, from the inside, the product of understanding that the right instruments needed to be built before the situation that required them arrived.

She had been built.

She was ready

The message came at four-seventeen.

Three words.

I’m in…

I read it.

Locked the phone.

Set it face down on the desk.

Voss Maritime.

The significance of it arrived in several stages as I sat with the message.

The woman was now, simultaneously, the person Maya was beginning to depend on and an employee of the company Alex was running. Not a planted spy… a professional woman with a legitimate background and verified references who had interviewed well and had been offered a position on her merits.

Nothing fabricated.

Nothing provable

Just a woman who had two relationships she had not disclosed to either party…. which was not a crime, which was not even uncommon, which was simply the natural result of a social and professional world where people who knew each other sometimes ended up working alongside each other.

Except that it hadn’t happened naturally.

I had arranged it.

From the outside, it was invisible

From the inside…… from my side, from her side…. it was the most significant placement I had made in months.

She had access to Maya through the friendship.

She had access to Alex through the company

She was inside both.

I reached for the Hale Group file. A company affiliated with Voss Martime, controlled by the Voss Family and by extension Alex.

Turned to the third page.
