He Came Back Running (Maya and Mason) novel Chapter 303

Chapter 303

Maya’s POV

I stopped halfway down the stairs. For several seconds I could not move at all… the complete paralysis of a body encountering something the mind refused to fully process.

A woman standing beside Alex in our sitting room, her posture familiar in a way that arrived from somewhere far beneath conscious memory, the recognition that bypassed every intervening year and landed directly in the place where I had once been small enough to know her without thinking about it.

Then my face hardened.

“What is she doing here?” I said.

My mother looked up at me.

Tears already gathering, her expression carrying the fragile hope of someone who had rehearsed this moment for longer than I wanted to consider.

“Maya,” she said.

“Don’t,” I said.

I walked the rest of the way down, keeping deliberate distance between us…

She tried to speak again. I shook my head before the words could fully form.

“You shouldn’t have come,” I said.

“I know you’re angry with me,” she said.

The laugh that escaped me arrived bitter, sharper than I intended. “Angry?” I said. “You think this is just anger?”

She lowered her eyes.

“I wanted to apologize,” she said.

“After all these years?” I said. “You had plenty of time.”

She took a small step forward

“I know I can’t change what happened,” she said. “But I wanted to see you.”

I stepped back before I fully understood I was doing it, the physical distance widening between us as though my body had decided, faster than my mind, exactly how much closeness it was willing to tolerate.

“You should have stayed wherever you were,” I said.

Alex moved toward me.

“Maya, please,” he said.

I turned toward him.

The cold clarity arriving all at once.

“You knew?” I said.

He nodded slowly.

found her before tonight,” he said.

I stared at him, the betrayal landing with a weight that momentarily eclipsed even the shock of my mother’s

presence.

“You found her?” I said.

“I wanted to understand what happened,” he said.

“You had no right,” I said, my voice rising now. “I told you I didn’t want to talk about her. I told you clearly, more than once, and you went looking for her anyway.”

Alex tried to explain, his voice carrying the careful, measured quality he always used when trying to defuse something that had already gone past the point of defusing.

“I only thought….” he said. “You’re about to be a mother too, Maya. I thought maybe you deserved the chance to hear her side, even if you decided you didn’t want it.”

I did not want to hear the reasoning….

The specific, particular way it made sense only deepened how betrayed I felt, the recognition that his logic wasn’t entirely wrong somehow making the situation worse rather than easier to forgive.

“I refuse to listen to either of you right now,” I said.

I looked between them.

At my mother, still standing with tears sliding freely now, the specific, desperate hope in her face that I had walked in expecting to find something closer to indifference and had instead found grief I did not want to acknowledge.

At Alex, watching me with the particular helplessness of someone who understood, too late, exactly how badly he had misjudged this.

“I don’t want this,” I said.

I turned away from both of them.

Walked upstairs without looking back, the sound of the door closing behind me the only response I had left to give.

My mother followed me up the stairs….

I heard her behind me before I reached the bedroom door….

I turned around at the threshold.

“Please just let me explain,” she said.

“I don’t want an explanation,” I said.

“You don’t know everything,” she said.

My eyes filled with anger before I could stop them.

“I know you left,” I said.

She swallowed hard.

“There was a reason,” she said.

Everyone always has a reason,” I said.

My voice began to shake, the accumulated years of a question I had never once been able to ask her directly finally surfacing.

“Where were you when I needed you?” I said. “Where were you when Dad died?”

She couldn’t answer immediately.

The painful silence stretched long enough that I felt myself hoping, despite everything, that she might finally say something that made sense of it.

“I was trying to protect you,” she said.

I stared at her.

“Then you failed,” I said.

Alex came into the room behind me….

His voice was gentle, careful…. reserved for moments when he believed calm was the only thing that could help.

“Maya,” he said. “Please try to calm down. Think about the babies.”

I turned on him immediately.

“Don’t use the babies to make me calm down,” I said.

He fell silent….

I looked at him, the hurt and anger tangling together until I could no longer separate one from the other.

“You knew I didn’t want her here,” I said. “And you still brought her back into my life.”

“I thought you deserved the chance to decide for yourself,” he said.

“You decided for me,” I said. “That’s exactly what you did, Alex. You made the decision and then handed me the consequences.”

My mother tried once more….

“Maya, please….”

I shook my head before she could continue.

“I’m not ready to forgive you,” I said. “I don’t know if I ever will be.”

She looked at me for a long moment.

Then she nodded slowly, the quiet acceptance of someone who had expected exactly this and had come anyway, hoping for something different despite knowing better.
