He Came Back Running (Maya and Mason) novel Chapter 305

Chapter 305

Maya’s POV

I was at my desk before the sun fully rose.

Sleep had offered little the night before…. not from the investigation alone, though the discovery Alex had made the previous evening kept surfacing every time I closed my eyes. The argument with my mother lingered too, threading itself through every quiet moment, refusing the distance I kept trying to put between us.

I pushed it aside…

The documents in front of me offered somewhere else to put my attention, and I gave myself to them fully.

I spent the morning cross-referencing dates.

My father’s original records against the pattern Alex had traced the night before…

The pattern sharpened as I worked.

Several of the smaller companies my father had done business with over the years had experienced sudden shifts shortly before being absorbed or pushed entirely out of the market. Not gradual decline. Sudden.

And Hargrove Meridian had been targeted during the same broad period

Not successfully…. my father had survived whatever this was, at least for a time. But the timing overlapped too precisely to dismiss.

I found the note near the bottom of a folder I had already been through twice.

Small. Handwritten. The hurried quality of something jotted down quickly rather than composed carefully, the kind of note a person made when a thought arrived too urgently to wait for a more formal record.

I read it….

“They aren’t interested in buying the company. They want something bigger. They want control.”

My hands tightened around the paper.

“He knew,” I whispered.

Alex looked up from across the desk.

“Knew what?” he said.

“That they were after more than his company,” I said.

I explained it to him slowly, the pieces assembling themselves as I spoke aloud, the way saying something aloud sometimes clarified it faster than simply thinking it through in silence.

“He wrote this before he died,” I said. “He understood, at some point, that whatever was happening wasn’t about acquiring Hargrove Meridian specifically. It was about something considerably larger. Control over an entire network of businesses, not just one….”

Alex studied the note carefully.

“That fits everything we found last night,” he said. “The pattern of investment, the timing, the way these companies were weakened rather than simply purchased.”

“He must have discovered this before his death,” I said. “Enough to understand the actual scope of it, not just the immediate threat to his own company.”

“We need to be careful,” Alex said. “We still don’t know exactly who we’re dealing with, or how far this network actually extends.”

“I know,” I said.

“I mean it, Maya,” he said. “The people responsible for this have shown they’re willing to kill. Your father. Carter. Daniel Foster, nearly. We can’t assume caution is optional at this point.”

“I’m not going to stop,” I said.

He looked at me for a long moment

Then he nodded….

I tried, across the rest of the morning, not to think about my mother.

The attempt failed more often than it succeeded

The argument kept surfacing at the edges of my concentration… her tears, the weight in her voice when she’d said

“there was a reason,” the way Alex had looked at me afterward, caught between his own guilt and his genuine belief that he had been trying to help.

I still didn’t understand why she had returned now.

After everything. After years of silence that had never once been broken, not for a birthday, not for a graduation, not even for my wedding.

I pushed the thought away.

Returned my attention to the investigation, because the investigation, at least, offered something the rest of my life currently could not.

Answers I could actually work toward.

I found the invitation in the early afternoon.

Buried within an older file, the paper slightly yellowed with age…. designed for people who expected discretion as a baseline requirement rather than an exception.

A private meeting.

The guest list included several names I now recognized from the investor records Alex and I had spent the previous evening tracing… the same small, consistent group threading through companies that should have had nothing to do with each other.

I searched for any public record of the meeting itself.

Nothing.

No mention in any archived press coverage, no regulatory filing that referenced it, no trace in any database I had access to that confirmed this gathering had ever officially taken place

It existed only here.

In a single yellowed invitation, tucked into an old file, carefully preserved by a man who had apparently
