Chapter 114
If he decided to move-
All this would end very badly.
People were already in between them, hands up, voices trying to calm things down, to diffuse whatever had sparked this.
For a second, it looked like it could snap.
Then Nathan was dragged back further, still yelling, still resisting, but being pushed away from DeLuca.
DeLuca didn’t move.
Not even once.
Eventually, the tension broke. The match resumed.
The crowd exhaled.
And I realized I had been holding my breath.
I forced myself to move now, scanning the area until I spotted her.
“Aria.”
She turned, lighting up immediately.
“Hey!”
I reached her, still slightly out of breath. “What happened?”
“There was almost a fight,” she said casually, like she was describing the weather. “Nathan got into it with Adrian, said something, threatened him, you know… the usual.”
“The usual?” I repeated.
She shrugged. “I would have loved to see it though. Imagine that fight.” She grinned. “Who do you think would win?”
“I don’t think we should be anticipating a fight,” I said flatly.
“That’s boring,” she replied. “Boys fighting is hot.”
I blinked
Then decided I did not have the mental strength for that conversation.
“Where have you been?” I asked instead. “I’ve been trying to reach you.”
“I’ve been here,” she said, gesturing vaguely toward the field. “Where else would I be? Adrian is playing.”
Right.
Of course.
“I need to talk to you,” I said.
She barely glanced at me. “Can it wait?”
“No.”
That got her attention.
She turned properly this time.
“…Okay. What’s up?”
“Not here,” I said, raising my voice slightly over the noise. “My lungs are already filing complaints.”
She laughed. “Alright, come on.”
We moved away from the crowd, slipping through people until the noise dulled into something manageable.
She crossed her arms lightly. “So?”
I pulled the purse from my bag and held it out.
“I saw this.”
Her eyes widened slightly.
“Oh! I forgot that at your place.” She reached for it. “Thanks for bringing it.”
“That’s not it,” I said quickly.
She paused.
“What do you mean?”
I reached into the purse, pulled out the notebook, and turned it toward her.
“This.”
She looked at it.
Then back at me.
“…Yeah?”
I hesitated for half a second, then kept it vague.
“I saw the name. Volkov. And I… I’ve heard that name before. Like, somewhere connected to…” I waved my hand vaguely. “…some mafia thing.”
Her reaction was immediate.
“Of course not,” she said, almost laughing. “I’m not related to him.”
I blinked.
“That fast?”
She rolled her eyes playfully. “Come on, Daisy. Really?”
I searched her face.
“Then why-?”
“Oh,” she said, like she had just realized. “That.”
She smiled, slightly embarrassed.
“Okay, this is going to sound stupid.”
I waited.
