He Didn’t Kidnap Me. Not Exactly novel Chapter 198

Chapter 198

Chapter 104 Too Late

(Daisy’s POV)

The air was quiet.

Not the uneasy kind of quiet that settled before an argument or the suffocating silence that followed tragedy, but the comfortable kind that wrapped itself around everything like a warm blanket.

Sunlight filtered through the large windows, painting soft golden rectangles across the polished wooden floor while a gentle breeze wandered in through the slightly opened balcony door, carrying with it the distant sounds of a city that had absolutely no idea a war was quietly assembling beneath its ordinary afternoon.

For the first time in what felt like forever, nobody was shooting at me.

I honestly couldn’t believe that had become something worth appreciating.

I sat comfortably on the long cream-colored couch with one leg carefully stretched out to avoid irritating the healing wound beneath my bandages.

This apartment itself wasn’t overly decorated, but everything about it felt expensive in the effortless way only rich people seemed capable of achieving. The furniture wasn’t loud. The colors weren’t flashy. Every piece simply looked like it belonged exactly where it was.

Apparently, Adrian owned far too many places to live.

Or rented them.

Or secretly built them.

Honestly, at this point, nothing about that man surprised me anymore.

He had brought me here only a little while ago after deciding my lodge building was no longer safe, and although I hadn’t asked many questions, I knew enough to understand that this wasn’t home. It was simply somewhere temporary. Somewhere quiet. Somewhere hidden until he decided what his next move would be.

I leaned back into the couch and allowed myself a slow breath.

It felt… peaceful.

Wonderfully, suspiciously peaceful.

Which was exactly why I didn’t trust it.

Peace had become temporary.

Almost borrowed.

Outside these walls, Roman Volkov was somewhere in the city, and the very mention of his name seemed capable of darkening Adrian’s expression. Somewhere else, Nico- the same Nico who had once joked with me, teased Adrian, and stood beside Adrian through so many years of friendship, had chosen power over brotherhood.

The thought still felt unreal.

Roman Volkov frightened me because I knew almost nothing about him- except for the fact that he’s supposed to be my father.

Meanwhile, Nico frightened me for the opposite reason. I knew exactly who he had been.

Or at least… I thought I did.

Perhaps that was why his betrayal lingered differently in my mind. Volkov was an enemy Adrian had expected eventually. Nico wasn’t. One threatened Adrian’s life, but the other had managed something quieter and perhaps even crueler.
