Chapter 221
{Daisy’s POV)
The door began to open.. and every instinct inside me screamed.
No.
Please don’t.
The gap widened slowly, and then a familiar figure stepped through.
DeLuca.
The moment I saw him, everything inside me collapsed.
He was here. He had actually come.
Because of me.
My vision blurred almost immediately as tears gathered in my eyes. I couldn’t stop them. I couldn’t stop the guilt either. My head moved on its own, shaking slowly as though I could somehow tell him everything without saying a word.
I’m sorry.
I didn’t know what to do.
I’m sorry.
For a brief moment, DeLuca didn’t look at me.
His gaze swept calmly across the room instead, moving from one armed man to the next. His eyes lingered on every rifle, every position and every angle before finally settling on me.
His expression barely changed.
Most people wouldn’t have noticed anything.
I did.
There was the faintest tightening around his eyes. The slightest hardening of his jaw. To anyone else, it would have looked like nothing.
To DeLuca…
It meant everything.
He saw the tears threatening to spill down my face. He saw me shaking my head. Then his gaze shifted past me, past the gun pressed against my temple, until it settled on Aria.
The softness disappeared completely and what remained wasn’t rage.
It was colder than that.
A quiet, unwavering glare that somehow made even my breathing sound too loud.
Behind me, I felt Aria smile.
“So…”
Her animated voice drifted through the silence as though none of this were unusual.
“Adrian DeLuca.”
She tilted her head.
“I suppose introductions are overdue.”
Nobody spoke.
“I know you’re smart enough to have suspected me after everything that’s happened.”
She gave a light shrug.
