He Didn’t Kidnap Me. Not Exactly novel Chapter 26

Chapter 26

“You again.”

“Yeah,” I responded, already tired.

He opened the driver’s door with a quiet shake of his head. “You’re leaving, and somehow I’m still not free of you.”

That felt… unfairly accurate.

“I’m sorry,” I said, because that was becoming my default setting around him.

He didn’t even look at me.

“Now I have to follow you around, track your schedule, sit outside your premises like don’t have better things to do.”

I hesitated, then tried, “At least it’s… less life-threatening?”

He turned to look at me then… and it was not a friendly look.

“That’s not the point.” He gritted his teeth.

Right.

I nodded once and got into the car. “Okay. I’ll stop talking now.”

“Good,”

We sat in silence for about three seconds before he started the car.

Then, “I’ll need your schedule,” he said. “Classes. Timing. Everything. DeLuch said we should get that from you for accurate movements.”

“That’s fine,” I replied, “I’ll send it when I get a phone,”

He reached into the console and pulled one out, along with a small card.

“Already handled.”

Oh.

I took it from him, turning it over in my hand.

“Thank you-”

“Don’t thank me.”

I glanced at him. You know what?

“You’re right,” I said. “He broke my last one, so this is technically a replacement, and I owe no one gratitude.”

Fritzo didn’t respond. But I was pretty sure that counted as a small win.

The drive didn’t take long.

Familiar roads started appearing, and something in my chest lightened in a way I wasn’t expecting.

“This is it,” I said, pointing ahead. “Maple Crest Apartments.”

He slowed the car.

“And the school?” he asked.

“Westbridge University. Just down that road and to the left. You’ll see it.”

He nodded once and then the car came to a stop. I reached for the handle to step out, but his voice cut in.

“This better be the place.” He said and I glanced at him.
