Chapter 32
Interesting.
But I wasn’t falling for it.
“So listen carefully now,” I went on, because clearly I had decided this was a speech, “I don’t know what kind of report you’re planning to give back, but let me help you out. I’m not running. I’m not doing anything suspicious. I’m literally just trying to survive school, which is already stressful enough without someone standing across a field staring at me like I’m part of a forbidden
science experiment.”
He blinked then. “Excuse me?” he said now and I nodded.
“Yes. Exactly. That. That tone right there. That’s the problem. You’re making it weird.”
“What are you talking about? Do I know you?” He asked, his voice shifting from confusion to irritation.
“I think you know the answer to that question.”
“You need to step back and let me do my job.”
Oh.
So we are still pretending.
“That’s exactly what someone in your position would say,” I said immediately and his expression tightened.
“My position,” he repeated.
“Yes,” I said, like this was obvious, because it was. “The whole ‘watch her from a distance and report back’ position.” I said and frowned. “I get it. It’s very dedicated. Slightly concerning and definitely unnecessary.”
He stared at me now. Fully.
“I’m going to need you to stop,” he said more firmly this time. “Or I’ll have to call someone.”
I tilted my head.
“Oh, now we’re escalating it.”
He turned his head sharply and gestured to someone nearby.
“Hey,” he called and another man approached.
Same uniform. Same badge. Almost same-everything.
“This one’s been bothering me,” the first guy said. “And I don’t know what she’s talking about.”
I opened my mouth. Paused, then looked between the two of them. The moment stretched as I stared, and after a while, I realized something.
Something dreadful.
Oh.
Oh no.
“She thinks we’re pretending,” the first one said again, now looking unimpressed.
Silence followed then because suddenly, everything I had said replayed in my head.
Every word.
Every accusation.
“Wow,” I said and they stared at me. I cleared my throat slightly.
