Chapter 50
(Daisy’s POV)
The message sat on my screen like it had weight.
“You will see me soon.”
It was not dramatic or threatening in an obvious way. Just certain… which somehow made it worse,
The cab had already stopped, but I hadn’t moved. I was still staring at my phone like if I looked long enough, the words would rearrange themselves into something less terrifying. Something like just kidding or… wrong number. Have a nice day?
They didn’t.
“Is there a problem, ma’am?” the driver asked, glancing at me through the rearview mirror.
Right. Movement. Life. Functioning human behavior.
“Yes- no. I mean, no. No problem.” I forced a quick smile that he definitely didn’t believe.
“Sorry for the delay.” I said as I paid with what was officially my last piece of dignity— also known as my remaining cash. Good
thing I was starting work today.
I looked back down at my phone and started typing.
Pause.
Delete.
Too aggressive.
Try again.
“I’m sorry about the inconsistencies.”
Better.
“Things have been a little… complicated.”
Also true.
Then, because I am apparently incapable of stopping when I should:
“At one point I genuinely felt like dying, but I can’t die because I have school and projects and my mom-”
I stopped and read it.
“Absolutely no reason for this,” I muttered.
Delete.
Re-type.
“I’m just saying I apologize for the inconsistencies. There’s absolutely no need for you to come. Really.”
I stared at it for a second, then hit send before I could ruin it again.
Message delivered.
No reply.
I didn’t waste time lingering. I rushed inside the lodge building, unlocked the door to my room, and stepped in, immediately switching into survival mode.
Today was not optional.
1 had tests. Multiple. Important; the kind that lecturers look at and decide whether you deserve to suffer or just moderately struggle.
And I had already missed too much. So, no more hiding.
No more “I’ll go tomorrow.” Because tomorrow had arrived. Uninvited.
I changed quickly, grabbing the first decent outfit I could find. Not cute or styled. Just functional. Today was not about fashion- no
day for me was actually.
But today was about surviving public humiliation and hopefully passing exams.
