He Didn’t Kidnap Me. Not Exactly novel Chapter 9

Chapter 9

And-sharply.

“She’s harmless!” He announced, raising his hand for caution and with that, the tension was buffeted a bit. `

Most of them turned to look at him for which he continued explaining.

“She’s my prisoner so she’s not a threat.” He said and one of the men responded.

“She’s your prisoner?” He looked at me fiercely. “This is how your prisoner roams?!”

The man who said that was the same man who was now angrily wiping ketchup off his face. Which, in my opinion, was not my fault. The stand had been in the way.

DeLuca sighed now.

And it wasn’t loud or dramatic. It mirrored the quiet sigh of a man whose life had apparently become more complicated

than he preferred… which had nothing to do with me.

He turned to me now. “Daisy.” He gestured toward the door.

“Outside.”

That was probably the smartest suggestion I had heard all day.

“Great idea,” I said quickly.

I gave the room a small wave.

“Sorry about the ketchup.”

No one waved back.

With that, I slipped out of the room and the moment the door shut behind me, the air felt noticeably less smokey.

DeLuca followed a second later and the door clicked closed as he turned toward me.

“What was that?”

His voice wasn’t loud, but it was very controlled. Which somehow felt worse.

I lifted the bottle.

“Ketchup.” I told him and he stared at it.

“The ketchup is expired.”

I shook the bottle slightly for emphasis. “That’s a health hazard.”

He looked at the bottle again, then at me.

“You walked into a room full of armed men… during a mafia meeting… to complain about ketchup?”

“Yes.”

“You could have been killed.”

I tilted my head.

“They didn’t look that dangerous.”

“They were armed.”

“If I’m being honest, most of them looked starved,” I said thoughtfully.

I pointed toward the door.

“Except the fat guy on the left end of the room.”
