Chapter 5
At the office, something felt off.
My assistant, Emma, ran up, eyes red. “Nina, your office… someone’s in it.”
I pushed the door open.
Rose sat at my desk, flipping through the proposal I’d spent three all-nighters on.
Lucas lounged on the couch, spinning his car keys.
Jason leaned against the window, arms crossed, staring coldly at me.
The trio. Haunting me.
“What do you want?”
I stood in the doorway. Didn’t enter. Colleagues peeked from their desks.
Jason walked over, dropped a file on my desk. “Look, I’m trying to be fair here. Rose is taking over the project. She just got back from studying abroad, she needs something to cut her teeth on. You’re her big sister. Show her the ropes.”
I laughed, incredulous. “Practice? The Peterson account is worth hundreds of millions. You’re giving it to her
as a training exercise? Jason, have you lost your mind?”
His face hardened. “Watch your mouth. Rose is talented. I already spoke with Mr. Peterson, as long as a Mitchell’s on it, we’re good. You’re injured. Take some time off, heal up. I’m not firing you. You’re still getting
paid. What else do you want?”
Rose stood, clutching the proposal. Looking at me with wide eyes. “Nina, I’ll do my best. I’ll come to you with
questions… Just please help me, okay? I want to show Jason I can actually contribute.”
I stared at the proposal. My notes, covering every page. My sweat. My tears. The one thing that was
supposed to get me out.
Jason was handing it to Rose on a silver platter.
I looked at him. “What if I say no?”
He smirked. “Nina, let me make this real simple for you. Mitchell Group owns fifty-one percent of this
agency. I’m the majority shareholder. If I say you’re done, you’re done. In this city? You won’t even be able to
get a freelance gig.”
True. The Mitchells had deep roots here. He could blacklist me easily.
