Chapter 2
Dante’s voice was full of obvious admiration: “Getting into JPL at your age is incredible. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself.”
The two of them chatted away, completely oblivious to Evelyn standing silent in the shadows of the living room.
Just then, Dante’s aide came running in: “Colonel! Emergency situation! The upstream dam has failed, massive flooding, multiple homes underwater. Orders are to deploy immediately for search and rescue!”
Dante’s expression went stone–cold serious: “Mobilize the team now!”
‘I’m coming too,” Evelyn said suddenly.
Dante actually looked at her for once, seeming surprised.
‘Every pair of hands helps,” Evelyn added, her voice calm.
Seraphina immediately chimed in: “Dante, I’m coming too! I can help!”
Dante didn’t have time to argue, just nodded: “Stay close and follow orders!”
The rescue site was complete chaos. Raging floodwater everywhere.
Evelyn threw herself into the effort just like everyone else, moving civilians to safety, hauling supplies, her small frame navigating through mud and rushing
water without a thought for her own safety.
After they’d finally gotten all the civilians to higher ground, Dante grabbed a dry towel and his jacket. He handed both to Seraphina first, his voice gentler than Evelyn had ever heard it: “Here, dry off. Don’t catch cold. You’re still the same–always putting others first.”
Seraphina smiled bashfully. “Don’t just praise me. Your wife worked hard too.”
Only then did Dante turn to look at Evelyn. She was soaked to the bone, hair plastered to her face, cuts and scrapes all over her arms and legs–looking far more battered than Seraphina. But he just glanced at her once and said nothing.
lis aide came over with questions about disaster relief logistics, and Dante hurried off.
Seraphina turned to Evelyn: “Looks like everyone’s safe now. Should we head back?”
Evelyn nodded.
But just then, a thunderous roar echoed from upstream! A second flood surge came crashing toward them with even more devastating force!
Watch out!” someone screamed!
The spot where Evelyn and Seraphina were standing was instantly swallowed by the towering wall of water!
Both women were swept away by the current. They managed to grab onto a floating log, which kept them from being separated, but they were still in deadly danger!
“Evelyn! Seraphina!” Dante saw them from the shore, his face going white as he immediately organized a rescue.
But the current was too strong for the rescue bont to get close safely. The rescue captain shouted desperately: “Colonel! The current’s too powerful! We can only save one at a time! If we try for both, we might lose them both!”
Dante looked at the two women in the raging water, his eyes filled with anguish, but after only a few seconds, he gritted his teeth and gave the order: “Save Seraphina first!”
The rescuer hesitated: “But…

your wife…”
Chapter 2
That’s an order!” Dante’s voice was ice–cold and final. “Seraphina is a crucial scientist–we cannot afford to lose her! Evelyn is… just a housewife!”
JUST A HOUSEWIFE.
Those words were the final knife that completely pierced Evelyn’s heart!
She watched him direct the rescuers to pull Seraphina onto the boat first, watched him frantically check her for injuries, while he didn’t spare even a glance for his wife still struggling in the flood.
There was no greater heartbreak than this.
Her last bit of strength gave out. She then let go of the log and let the flood carry her away.
