Chapter 12
He frantically recalled the scene when they’d just returned home, his unease growing stronger. He turned to go back and prove that Evelyn’s words were lies–how could they possibly be divorced? But Seraphina grabbed his hand.
“Dante, where are you going? Let me come with you. Please help me, okay? I can’t lose this job! If you just talk to your wife, you can definitely make her change her mind!” Seraphina clung to Dante, pleading desperately.
But aerospace work was a matter of national priority, and these were Evelyn’s own words. The moment she left, staff members approached Seraphina.
Miss Voss, given what Dr. Thorne has stated, we need to conduct an investigation. Please cooperate with us.” They looked at Dante. “Are you a family member?”
Inder Seraphina’s pitiful, hopeful gaze, Dante frowned deeply. “There must be some misunderstanding. I’m Evelyn’s husband. She’s always been jealous of Seraphina–she must be saying this out of spite.”
Hearing this, both staff members couldn’t help but laugh. “Dr. Thorne jealous of an intern? Are you kidding? Do you know who Dr. Thorne is? If not for the ccident a few years ago, Dr. Thorne never would have left the space program. How could she possibly make false accusations?”
Jante suddenly fell silent. He’d always thought Evelyn was jealous of Seraphina’s position–after all, joining JPL was beyond most people’s reach. But now that e knew Evelyn was actually Dr. Thorne, did any of her supposed jealousy even make sense?
He was like a dud firecracker, having lost all grounds to defend Seraphina. He could only watch helplessly as Seraphina was taken away for investigation.
After he returned home, he indeed found the divorce papers Evelyn had mentioned on the coffee table.
Jante walked over and picked them up. Opening the document, he saw his and Evelyn’s names printed there, blindingly stark.
Why had she chosen to leave? Why divorce him?
Jante felt like his entire world had been turned upside down in just a few hours.
Recalling Evelyn’s speech at the send–off ceremony–she’d had stars in her eyes then, no longer a housewife worn down by domestic chores. Thinking of the bast, how she’d been willing to abandon such an important aerospace career to cook and care for him, Dante felt a surge of belated sweetness and regret.
f only he’d known Evelyn’s true identity earlier.
Now, looking at the divorce papers in his hands, he pounded the coffee table hard, suddenly remembering what Evelyn had said at the send–off ceremony.
Seraphina–this all had to be connected to Seraphina.
Thinking of all the accidents that had happened before, suspicion arose in his heart. After a moment, he got up and headed to the military base.
The personnel at the base all saluted when they saw him. “Colonel, what brings you to the base today?”
Dante kept his expression stern. “I need to review some surveillance footage. Don’t mind me.”
Yes, sir.”
They returned to their positions, and Dante went to the surveillance room. Most places had cameras now. He first checked incidents that had occurred on base, hen went to the science lab where Seraphina had conducted experiments, asking staff for previous surveillance records. Finally, the bookstore, the housing ompound, their home…
The more evidence he gathered, the more furious and panicked Dante became, because in every single incident, Evelyn hadn’t lied–it was all Seraphina framing
jer!
At the bookstore, Seraphina had fallen by herself. At the science museum, Seraphina had added the wrong proportions causing the explosion. During the fu outbreak, Seraphina had gone out herself to get clothes and caught it… Every incident, presented one by one before his eyes, made Dante realize how terribly Wrong he’d been.
