Chapter 17
he scalding chicken soup spilled in front of Seraphina, splashing all over her. She stared in disbelief as tears slowly welled up in her eyes, then broke down
creaming.
Why! Why! I’ve already suffered so much, why can’t you forget that bitch Evelyn? What’s wrong with me, Dante? Evelyn’s already gone, she’s not coming back, ou’re already divorced!”
he’d done so much for him! She’d nearly been raped by a gang of inmates at the reform facility, nearly frozen to death on cold nights, debased herself begging or his forgiveness–how was she inferior to Evelyn?
he could cook for Dante too, make him soup, but why, even though Evelyn had been gone so long, was his heart still only filled with her? It hadn’t been like
ais before!
eraphina couldn’t understand what she’d done wrong. She screamed, denouncing everything.
I’m not the one who’s wrong! If it weren’t for Evelyn, we never would have become like this! Dante, have you forgotten? You used to love me so much–it’s all ecause of Evelyn, all because of her!! Dante, why can’t we be like before? Evelyn already divorced you, but I won’t leave. Dante, why won’t you even look at
ne!”
he grew more agitated, standing up and trying to approach Dante, but the man frowned in disgust and stepped back.
You’re wrong, Seraphina. If it weren’t for you, Evelyn and I wouldn’t have become like this. Everything that’s happening to you now is what you deserve. You an’t compare to Evelyn–she’s Dr. Thorne of the space agency. What are you? You couldn’t even pass the agency interview, had to trade your body for position. f you hadn’t deceived me, I never would have treated you that way before, and I wouldn’t have hurt Evelyn.”
You’re the one who’s wrong. If it weren’t for you, Evelyn wouldn’t have divorced me!”
eraphina’s eyes filled with shock. “Dante Blackwood, what are you saying?”
Dante didn’t hesitate, his voice harsh and ice–cold: “I’m saying, if it weren’t for you, Evelyn and I wouldn’t be divorced. We’d be happily married. Everything is our fault–only you did wrong.”
eraphina stood there stunned. After a long moment, as if she’d heard something ridiculous, her lips twisted into a smile.
You say it’s all my fault? You say it’s all my fault!?”
he suddenly raised her voice, no longer pleading in her eyes, but thick hatred and mockery.
Dante Blackwood, have you forgotten? You’re the one who couldn’t let me go! How long were you married to Evelyn? Were you ever good to her even once? ‘ou’re the one who personally brought me back home! You’re also the one who, no matter what happened, never investigated, only believed my words. If you’d rusted Evelyn even a little bit, I never could have succeeded time after time! Now you say it’s all my fault–what gives you the right, Dante Blackwood!” She hrieked, the long torture and abuse, plus Dante’s attitude, finally breaking her completely. She recklessly revealed deeper truths behind all her lies.
Dante’s face darkened, but Seraphina seemed not to notice, speaking faster and more frantically.
Whether it was sending her to reform camp, getting her injured, making her take military lashes, or even when she had the flu–you locked her in her room without a drop of water or bite of food! Dante Blackwood, do you dare say I did those things? You did all of that! I’m not the one who drove Evelyn away–you lid that yourself! If you hadn’t done all those things, how could Evelyn have possibly left you!”
That’s right, she doesn’t want you anymore! You brought this all on yourself–you deserve it!”
by the end, Seraphina was laughing through her tears. Dante turned and left the study, ignoring her ravings.
He left behind only one ice–cold statement: “Looks like you still haven’t learned your lesson, Seraphina. You really never change.”
