Chapter 23
The trainer was horrified. “Sir! That’s too dangerous! You could be killed!”
“Let it out!” Theodore roared, his eyes empty and resolute.
The trainer didn’t dare disobey. Trembling, he opened the stable door.
A tall, ill–tempered black stallion burst out, whinnying loudly.
Theodore didn’t dodge or move away, instead, he walked toward the horse. He was trying to experience for himself the fear and pain Evelyn had felt.
THUD!
A heavy hoof kicked him squarely in the chest.
CRACK! The distinct sound of bone breaking rang out.
Theodore flew backward like a kite with its string cut, landing hard on the ground. He coughed up mouthfuls of blood as excruciating pain washed over him His vision blurred, and his consciousness began to fade.
Before he passed out completely, he gazed at the grey sky, a twisted, agonized smile on his lips, and murmured, his breath barely a whisper.
‘Evelyn… was it… this painful…”
When the paramedics carried him out of the riding ring, he was on the brink of death.
three broken ribs, internal injuries, his life hanging by a thread.
After being rushed to the hospital again and narrowly surviving, Theodore lay in his hospital bed and received the only message Evelyn sent him.
No visit, no words of comfort, just a cold note that read:
Theodore, your repentance doesn’t even come close to one–ten–thousandth of the pain I felt.j
Don’t die. Live and suffer.J
.ooking at these words, Theodore first burst into hysterical laughter, laughing until tears streamed down his face, then his laughter turned into suppressed, lesperate sobs.
He knew this wasn’t forgiveness. It was a curse more cruel than hatred.
he wanted him to live, to consciously and eternally exist in endless regret and agony.
and that curse truly did become the story of the rest of his life.
Meanwhile, Maren’s fate was also sealed.
lased on the evidence Theodore provided, the police quickly arrested her.
lefore her trial, she somehow managed to escape and, in a crazed state, rushed to the Ashworth estate, wanting to see Evelyn one last time.
When the bodyguards stopped her, she stood on the other side of the iron gate, laughing and crying, completely unhinged
It was me! I did it all! I framed you! I killed the dog too! I hate you! Evelyn, I hate you! Why?! Why was it that our parents always loved me, but Theodore… Theodore still fell in love with you in the end?! I lost… I lost completely… Hahaha…”
She was eventually taken away by force. After a court ordered psychiatric evaluation, she was diagnosed with severe schizophrenia and committed to a

high security mental institution.
One cold winter night, clutching a piece of fruit candy–the kind Evelyn loved as a child–that she had found somewhere, she curled up in a cold corner. murmuring. “Evelyn… I’m sorry… have some candy…”
Then, she quietly stopped breathing, bringing a messy end to her pathetic and hateful life.
As for Theodore, after his body had slightly recovered, the last thing he did was find Evelyn.
He compiled all of his assets–all his shares in Harrison Industries, his real estate properties around the world, his vast cash reserves–into a thick stack of transfer documents and presented them to Evelyn.
He looked at her, his eyes filled with the utmost humility, pleading, and reluctance to let go. “Evelyn… I know this can’t even begin to compensate you… but this is everything I have… please… take it…”
Evelyn looked at the stack of documents symbolizing immense wealth, her expression unchanging, as if she were looking at a pile of scrap paper. She reached out, not to take them, but in front of him, slowly, one by one, she tore the documents to shreds.
The scraps of paper fluttered down like snowflakes, landing on Theodore’s pale, despairing face.
“Theodore,” her voice was cold and clear, delivering a final verdict, “your things disgust me.”
“We settled our accounts long ago.”
With that, she turned resolutely and walked away. Her back was straight, without a hint of hesitation.
Theodore stood frozen, looking at the shredded paper covering the floor, watching that back completely disappear from view, and finally understood.
He had lost her.
Forever, he had lost her.
And for the rest of his long life, he would be forever trapped in Evelyn’s curse to “live and suffer“, repenting day and night, unable to even die.
