eraphina took the honey ginger tea from the maid. The warm liquid slid down her throat, carrying the sharp spice of ginger and the cloying sweetness of sugar.
he had hoped the hot drink might dispel some of the chill in her heart, but instead, an intense, unbearable itch instantly spread from her throat to her limbs.
Cough, cough–1”
he began to cough violently, her breathing growing labored as a large, angry rash broke out across her neck.
This tea… what was added to it?” she asked Mrs. Gable, her voice raspy.
ast then, Melody shot up from the sofa, her voice dripping with feigned concern. “Sera, I noticed you haven’t seemed well lately. When I was in the kitchen, 1 hought maybe you were having period cramps, so I remembered a home remedy and added just a little bit of pepper. They say it can help warm you up.”
Pepper?!” Seraphina felt as if she’d been struck by lightning, her vision turning black at the edges.
he was severely allergic to pepper–a fact she had told Melody very, very clearly!
he feeling of suffocation intensified, she could feel her windpipe constricting, and every breath felt like she was swallowing razor blades.
Melody, however, acted terrified, turning weakly to Liam: “Liam, I… I didn’t do it on purpose. I honestly had no idea Sera was so severely allergic to pepper…”
iam frowned, his tone meant to be comforting. “Don’t panic. Mrs. Gable! Go find the allergy medicine, quickly!”
Mrs. Gable hurried to the medicine cabinet, rummaged through it, and pulled out an anti–allergy injection pen.
Let me. I’ll give it to Sera, as a way to make up for my mistake.” Melody stepped forward and took the auto–injector from Mrs. Gable’s hands.
But her hands were unusually clumsy. Her fingers trembled as she held the pen, and with a clatter, it fell to the floor. It rolled a few times before she
ccidentally crushed it under her flustered foot.
Melody’s face turned deathly pale. She stood there helpless, her eyes instantly reddening, looking the very picture of pitiful innocence.
eeing this, Liam immediately stepped forward, gently putting an arm around her shoulder to comfort her. “It’s okay, Melody, don’t be scared. It’s not your fault.”
The two of them comforted and leaned on each other as if no one else existed, having seemingly forgotten all about Seraphina, who was on the verge of
uffocating nearby.
Help… help me…” Seraphina used the last of her strength to let out a faint, desperate plea.
Only then did Mrs. Gable snap out of it and frantically dial for an ambulance.
he ambulance siren grew louder as it approached. Just as the paramedics rushed into the villa to put Seraphina on a stretcher, a “frightened” Melody suddenly vent limp and fainted.
iam’s expression changed drastically. He immediately scooped Melody into his arms and barked at the paramedics, “Take her first! She fainted, it’s an mergency! As for Sera… wait for the next ambulance!”
The paramedics looked at Seraphina, who was struggling for breath and losing consciousness, then at Melody, held tightly in Liam’s anxious arms. In the end, hey put Melody in the ambulance first.
By the time the second ambulance arrived, Seraphina was on the brink of unconsciousness.
When she slowly regained consciousness in her hospital bed, the attending physician walked in and warned her gravely, “Ms. Vance, your allergic reaction was extremely severe. If you had arrived just a few minutes later, your life could have been in danger. You must be careful from now on. Stay away from your allergens and never be careless.”
Seraphina nodded weakly, her voice dry. “Thank you, doctor.”

After the doctor left, a long silence fell over the room.
A long while later, Liam finally pushed the door open and came in.

“Sera, you’re awake. Melody didn’t mean to do it. You saw how scared she was–she fainted and is still in the next room. Just don’t hold it against her. When she wakes up, I’ll have her come apologize. Just forgive her so she doesn’t have to feel guilty.”
Seraphina found it utterly absurd. She looked up at him. “Hold it against her? Liam, I was the one who was about to die! I almost lost my life because of her little mistake‘, and now you’re telling me to consider her feelings?”
“But you didn’t die, did you?”
At his words, Seraphina’s pupils contracted violently, a bone–deep chill shooting up from the soles of her feet to the top of her head.
Because she didn’t die, she couldn’t hold it against Melody?!
