Chapter 9
Chapter 9
Damian stood on the stage, the prayer beads at his wrist moving unconsciously, rapidly through his fingers.
is the minutes ticked by, the murmuring among the reporters below grew louder.
Why isn’t Mrs. Vaughn here yet?”
Could it be that Mr. Blackwood was just speaking for himself, and she has no intention of coming to clear the air?”
Looks like there’s more to this story…”
he composure on Damian’s face began to crack, and a baseless panic washed over him.
le kept looking towards the entrance, but it remained empty.
inally, the driver he’d sent rushed in from a side door, jogging anxiously to whisper a few words in his ear.
What? She got into someone else’s car?”
Who else could she have gone with?”
Jamian’s voice shot up, forgetting for a moment that countless cameras were pointed at him.
lis words were like cold water hitting hot oil, the room erupted.
teporters exchanged excited glances, and the sound of camera shutters filled the air.
he driver, under immense pressure, repeated with difficulty.
The madam… she got into a car with diplomatic plates. It wasn’t the car we sent.”
Diplomatic plates?
Damian’s mind went blank.
ll of the Blackwood family cars had New York plates, without exception.
orelei had no friends or family in New York. Whose car could she have gotten into? Who would pick her up at a time like this?
in idea he had never considered surfaced-
orelei, perhaps, had chosen to leave.
When he needed her to show up and defend him and Sabine, she had unhesitatingly chosen to walk away.
The thought made his breath catch in his throat, and he blurted out, “The press conference is on hold!”
Then, without a second thought, he turned to leave.
‘Damian!”
Sabine quickly grabbed his sleeve, her perfectly made–up face filled with disapproval, and lowered her voice.
“What do you think you’re doing, leaving now? All these reporters are watching! At least wait until the press conference is over…”
Damian paused, looking at Sabine’s unwilling expression. The thought of Lorelei’s unknown whereabouts filled him with a strange irritation.

He tried to be patient, but his voice was tinged with an anxiety he himself didn’t notice.
“Didn’t you hear me? Lorelei was taken! We don’t know what’s going on!”
Stung by the urgency in his tone, Sabine’s voice grew shrill.
“Taken? Who in New York would dare touch someone from the Blackwood family? I think she did it on purpose…”
She hadn’t finished speaking when Damian, as if struck by a thought, turned to stare at her.
‘Sabine, you’re from Miami.”
Was it your people, or one of the Montoya family’s rivals, who took her to get back at you?”
sabine’s eyes widened in shock. She stared at Damian in disbelief, a sense of grievance washing over her.
‘Damian! You suspect me? You’re suspecting me, for her? Why would I do that!”
Their argument was completely exposed to all the reporters and cameras below.
Damian looked at Sabine’s tearful face, then at the probing lenses of the cameras below, and a profound sense of helplessness swept over him.
He suddenly remembered when they had gotten married.
A scandal had broken about Lorelei approaching him for money, and a torrent of accusations had been hurled at her.
