Chapter 4
When Chloe came to again, she was lying in a hospital bed.
A nurse had just finished taking her temperature. Seeing Chloe’s eyes flutter open, she let out a visible sigh of relief.
“You’re finally awake. Do you have any idea you had a fever of 104? A little later and it could have developed into pneumonia! Your temperature is down now. We’ll keep you for observation, but if everything looks good, you should be able to go home tomorrow.”
Chloe thanked her, her voice raw and hoarse.
Just as the nurse left, Ryan walked in. When he saw her pale, drawn face, a flicker of guilt crossed his eyes.
“Chloe, yesterday I was just worried that Jessica would have an episode from all the stress. I spoke out of turn in the heat of the moment. Please don’t take it to heart. As for all the souvenirs in the cabinet, I’ve already bought new replacements for everything.”
Chloe, her eyes red–rimmed, cut him off. “What about my grandmother’s photo?”
She didn’t even want Ryan anymore, so why on earth would she care about those stupid souvenirs?
The only thing in the world she cared about right now was that picture of her grandmother.
Ryan was silent for a few seconds before he finally spoke in a low voice.
“The photo was soaked, it was ruined. Jessica is not stable, she can’t always control herself. Besides, you already hit her, so let’s just call it even, okay?”
Looking at Ryan trying so desperately to make excuses for Jessica, Chloe suddenly felt like there was nothing left to say.
She closed her eyes. “Just go. I’m tired.”
Ryan let out a long, heavy sigh.
“I know you’re upset, but the most important thing right now is for you to get better. Your grandmother wouldn’t want to see you like this. Get some rest. I’ll come back to check on you in a little while.”
Only after the soft click of the door closing did Chloe raise a hand to wipe away the silent tears from the corner of her eye.
Her body was just too weak.
Before long, she had drifted back to sleep.
In that hazy space between sleep and wakefulness, Chloe was startled awake by a sharp, stabbing pain in her right hand.
Her eyes flew open in terror to see Jessica standing over her, holding a bloody needle. Her own hand was already a swollen, purple mess.
“Jessica, what the hell are you doing!?”
She tried to yank her hand back, but Jessica held it in a death grip.
“You two are already divorced, so why do you keep clinging to him? You love playing the sick victim to get sympathy, don’t you? Well, today I’m going to give you some real treatment!”

Chapter 4
Looking at her completely unhinged expression, a sudden, terrifying chill washed over Chloe.
She kicked out with her leg, sending Jessica stumbling back, and scrambled to her feet, trying to make a run for the door.
Just then, the bodyguards stationed outside heard the commotion and burst in, blocking her path.
Jessica’s eyes lit up with a malevolent glee.
“Hold her down for me!”
The men saw the needle in her hand and exchanged uneasy glances, but none of them dared to step forward and help.
Seeing their hesitation, Jessica suddenly pressed the point of the needle against her own neck.
“Ryan told you that your number one job is to ensure my safety. If you don’t listen to me, and something happens to me, Ryan will never let you off the hook!”
“Besides, they’re already divorced! What are you so worried about!”
At that, the men’s hesitation vanished. They rushed forward and seized Chloe.
Jessica let out a cold, triumphant laugh and once again plunged the needle into the back of Chloe’s hand, again, and again, and again.
“I will never, ever let you get back together with Ryan!”
