Hearing the familiar voice, Chloe froze for a split second.
The next moment, she frowned and shoved him away forcefully. She was about to say something, but when she saw the man’s face clearly, her eyes widened in shock.
Ryan’s eyes were bloodshot, his face was deathly pale, and his head was wrapped in gauze.
In all their eight years together, this was the first time Chloe had ever seen him look so utterly pathetic and haggard.
And yet, her heart felt nothing.
“Ryan, what are you doing here?”
Her words were like a bucket of ice water poured over his head.
They instantly extinguished all the desperate affection and fragile anticipation that had been welling up inside him.
He took a deep, shuddering breath, suppressing the bitter sting in his heart.
He was about to speak when he suddenly caught sight of Ethan standing in the living room.
“Ethan Miller? What the hell are you doing here?”
A terrible, sickening premonition surged in the pit of Ryan’s stomach.
His eyes frantically scanned the room. When he saw the hot pot on the dining table and the two sets of neatly arranged tableware, his pupils constricted. He asked, his voice trembling with a dreadful certainty.
“Are you two living together?”
Ryan looked at her, his eyes pleading for her to deny it.
But Chloe had absolutely no patience to explain the situation to him.
She frowned. “If there’s nothing else you need, please leave.”
With that, she tried to slam the door shut. Ryan panicked and instinctively put his hand out to block it. The heavy door slammed against his palm, and he couldn’t help but let out a grunt of pain.
But he didn’t pull his hand back. Instead, he looked at her, his eyes red–rimmed and desperate.
“Chloe, I’m your husband! You ran off to another country behind my back without saying a single word. I’ve been going out of my mind looking for you!”
“And what do I find? You’re living with another man! How could you do this to me?”
Chloe almost laughed out of sheer, unadulterated anger.
“Husband? If I remember correctly, we’re already divorced. Who I’m with now is absolutely none of your business.”
At her words, Ryan suddenly became extremely agitated.

Chapter 16
“I didn’t agree to the divorce, so it doesn’t count! Chloe, you’ve been the only one I’ve ever loved, from the very beginning to the very end. I know I was wrong. I swear, I’ll never have anything to do with Jessica again. Can you please, please just give me another chance? Can we start
over?”
The man’s eyes were brimming with desperate pleading and a fragile, flickering hope.
But listening to his words, Chloe only felt a profound sense of disgust.
She let out a cold, humorless scoff. “Love me? Have you completely forgotten everything you’ve done? You let Jessica destroy my grandmother’s only photo, you stood by while she almost crippled my right hand, and even after she tried to murder me and I barely escaped with my life, you had the audacity to force me to give her my blood, and in the end, you actually seemed to think a flimsy, meaningless apology from her would make everything okay.”
“Ryan, if that’s what you call love, then it is absolutely, unequivocally disgusting.”
With every single word Chloe spoke, the color drained further and further from Ryan’s face.
He opened his mouth, but couldn’t utter a single word in his own defense.
Only now, in this moment, did he truly and fully understand how terrible his actions had been. He was the one who had driven Chloe away. He
had done this to himself.
Ryan couldn’t possibly explain or justify his bastardly behavior.
But he also knew that he couldn’t, and wouldn’t, be separated from Chloe.
He stubbornly reached for Chloe’s hand, but Ethan stepped in front of him, blocking his path.
Having now heard just how much Chloe had suffered because of Ryan.
His face turned cold and hard. “After everything you’ve done to her, what gives you the right to even ask for a second chance?”
