Chapter 4

The crowd started whispering, and phones whipped out to record the drama.

Scarlett’s expression turned icy. “This isn’t a stage for your tantrums. Get up.”

“I’m so sorry, Ms. Flynn! I know how it looks, but I just needed Dr. Wilder’s treatment! But I need to survive–please, give me a break! Don’t let the agency fire me!”

She was hyperventilating, looking pitiful as hell.

“Everyone in the industry is branding me a homewrecker! Someone anonymously reported me for seducing a male employer, and now nobody will hire me!”

Ruby looked up through teary eyes, her tone carrying a veiled accusation.

“I can’t think of anyone else who would do that… so I’m begging you!”

Passersby stopped to watch, pointing fingers, cameras trained on them, the gossip spreading like wildfire.

“Is the mistress begging for mercy?”

“She looks pathetic, but hey, you don’t go wrecking families.”

Scarlett’s face darkened instantly. “What the hell are you talking about? I don’t have time to waste on sabotaging you!”

“RUBY!”

A familiar voice rang out. Cormac sprinted over and immediately shielded Ruby behind him.

His eyes were cold as ice as he glared at Scarlett with suspicion.

“Scarlett, Ruby is a vulnerable patient! Why are you pulling strings to destroy her livelihood?”

Scarlett felt her heart being squeezed in a vice, she could barely breathe.

“Cormac, we’ve known each other ten years. Do you really trust me that little? I told you, I didn’t do it!”

“You didn’t?” Cormac looked disappointed, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “Ruby works hard. She has a great reputation. Who else would target her but you? You think she reported herself?”

Scarlett suddenly laughed, laughing until tears welled up.

“Cormac, I don’t hide in the shadows. If I wanted to take her down, I’d do it to her face, not with some cheap trick behind her back!”

“Save your breath. You’re just digging a deeper hole,” Cormac cut her off, his words toxic. “Scarlett, jealousy is a disease. It’s going to kill you.”

Cormac grabbed Ruby and walked away.

Ten years of deep love, giving him everything she had, and all she got in return was being called “jealous.”

Watching his back retreat, blood rushed to her head. She wanted to scream at him about the divorce.

The next second, a piercing pain shot through her brain and her abdomen simultaneously. Her vision went black.

“Miss? Are you okay?! Call 911!”

The screams of bystanders exploded in her ears, but Cormac just kept walking, protecting Ruby, never once looking back.

At the hospital, after a round of tests, the doctor sighed at the report.

“Ms. Flynn, the tumor in your brain is a ticking time bomb. You cannot get agitated. The consequences would be… catastrophic.”

He hesitated, but his eyes drifted to her lower belly. The implication was clear: terminate the pregnancy.

Scarlett nodded numbly, took the report, and left.

She went to Cormac’s clinic. The moment she opened the door, she saw Ruby.

A flash of triumph crossed Ruby’s eyes, but her voice was meek. “Ms. Flynn… maybe I shouldn’t be here without telling you…”

Cormac took off his glasses, speaking without skipping a beat.

“Scarlett, Ruby is unemployed. I hired her as my assistant.”

“I don’t care,” Scarlett looked at him calmly. “Cormac, I want a divorce.”

Cormac froze mid–polish. “Scarlett, I don’t accept that. This is just a misunderstanding!”

Scarlett let out a cold laugh, dripping with mockery.

“So, screwing her under the guise of ‘medical treatment‘ is a misunderstanding? Cormac, if you don’t feel dirty, I do. Did you even test her fo STDs before you hopped in the sack?”

“Scarlett!” Cormac roared. “Apologize to Ruby!”

The next second, Ruby went pale and dropped to her knees in front of Scarlett.

“Ms. Flynn! It’s all my fault! I shouldn’t have come between you two! Don’t blame the Doctor!”

She started slapping her own face–hard. Her cheek turned red instantly.

“I’m trash! I shouldn’t have asked for his help! Please don’t divorce him!”

Scarlett scoffed. She had no patience for this soap opera performance and turned to leave.

“Ms. Flynn, wait!”

Ruby grabbed her arm, then suddenly stumbled.

She tightened her grip on Scarlett and threw herself backward, straight down the stairs.

A blood–curdling scream echoed as both Scarlett and Ruby tumbled down the steps.

Ruby lay at the bottom of the stairs, face white as a sheet, looking terrifyingly still.

Cormac’s eyes filled with panic. He rushed down to scoop Ruby up, then snapped his head to glare at Scarlett, his rage consuming him.

“Scarlett… What is wrong with you?! She’s suffering enough, why won’t you let her go?!”

Fighting back hatred and clutching her splitting abdomen, Scarlett’s voice trembled. “I didn’t do it! Check the cameras!”

“The cameras are broken,” Cormac hissed through gritted teeth, eyes dead cold. “You waited for the perfect moment to push her!”

Ruby weakly grabbed Cormac’s shoulder, sounding pitiful.
