Chapter 9
Cormac watched the van carrying Scarlett disappear into the distance. The trace of worry on his brow faded, replaced entirely by thoughts of Ruby.
Ruby was a special patient.
Back when she was their maid, he always felt sorry for her.
She was like a frightened deer, always subtly displaying her fragility, practically begging for pity.
After everything she’d been through, a girl from the sticks with no family must be terrified. He needed to go back, comfort her, and find her a new job.
Hiring her as an assistant was just to keep Mick away. Now that they were divorced, he didn’t need to keep her at the clinic. Scarlett would be happy about that later, right?
Cormac sighed helplessly.
He slid the key into the lock, turned it, and pushed the door open–then froze dead in his tracks.
The living room was dim and suggestive, filled with a cloying, sweet scent of incense.
Scarlett usually liked subtle woody notes, she would never use something this overpowering.
The furniture looked different too. Scarlett’s favorite plant was gone, replaced by gaudy red rugs and sofa covers.
Confused, he was about to ask Ruby if she’d messed with the house.
he next second, the bedroom door opened.
Cormac… you’re home.”
uby, face painted with heavy makeup, sashayed toward him, swaying her hips, her eyes heavy with seduction, voice dripping with honey.
dressed up just for you. Do I look pretty?”
he was wearing Scarlett’s burgundy silk nightgown–a birthday gift from him that Scarlett cherished and only wore on anniversaries.
one was the timid, plain Ruby. She reached out to hook her arm through his.
ormac recoiled like he’d been touched by something filthy, stepping back sharply to dodge her hand.
Who told you to wear that?”
is voice trembled with suppressed rage. The sight of that nightgown on her was blindingly offensive.
uby’s smile froze. “What’s wrong, Cormac? It’s just a dress…”
is face went dark, eyes filled with cold disgust, a complete 180 from his usual gentleness.
That is Scarlett’s dress. You are not allowed to wear it,” he said coldly, leaving no room for argument. “Take it off. Now”
uby, not willing to give up, teared up instantly. “Cormac, why are you so mean? I know you think I’m trash, not good enough for nice clothes! Fine, I’ll take it
ff!”
ormac furrowed his brow and sighed, exasperated, but still kept his distance.
tuby, I know you’re stressed, but don’t forget who you are. I’m helping you because you are my patient. Nothing else.”

Chapter 9
“Patient?”
Ruby gritted her teeth, stepped forward, and pulled down a strap.
“How about this? When you helped‘ me? When we slept together? Was I just a patient then? Dare you say you didn’t want it?”
“ENOUGH!”
Cormac shoved her away so hard she stumbled back and nearly fell.
Ruby, eyes red from his shouting, bit her lip and tried her old trick: playing the victim.
“Cormac… I don’t feel good… so dizzy… is it my condition again? Please… check me…”
She leaned toward him, feigning weakness.
But this time, Cormac wasn’t buying it.
He frowned, his tone dripping with impatience.
“I’m busy today. I can’t treat you. Behave yourself. If you’re really sick, go to the hospital yourself.”
He walked straight into his study and slammed the door. BANG!
Ruby stood alone in the living room, face cycling between pale and red, humiliated and furious.
Finally, she changed back into her own clothes and stormed out, slamming the door behind her.
