Cormac’s face changed instantly. On one hand, his missing wife whom he desperately missed.
On the other, a highly unstable patient threatening suicide again.
He hesitated for a split second, but ultimately couldn’t be ruthless. He told the caller:
I’m coming. Keep her talking, don’t let her jump!”
He hung up, cursed loudly, and pulled a U–turn toward home.
Suddenly, Ruby seemed so incredibly annoying. But he couldn’t ignore her. She was a patient.
Back home, Cormac found Ruby lying on the couch. Another shallow cut on her wrist, blood already dried.
Her eyes were vacant, but the moment she saw Cormac, the tears started flowing.
Cormac! You’re back! I thought I’d never see you again!”
Cormac frowned, checked the wound, and saw it was superficial. A cry for attention, not a suicide attempt.
le sighed, forcing patience. “What is it this time? Why do this?”
tuby threw herself into his arms, sobbing dramatically.
I dreamt about Mick again! He was chasing me with a knife! I was so scared, I had to come see you, but then I just wanted to die… Cormac, I have no one but
‘ou! Don’t leave me!”
Cormac patted her back mechanically. He felt zero pity, only suspicion.
Technically, he’d evaluated her before.
Post–divorce, her mental state should have stabilized. Suicidal ideation didn’t make sense.
Alright, stop crying. It’s not deep. I’ll clean it up.”
de got up to fetch the first aid kit, his tone flat.
After bandaging her, Cormac retreated to his study, but Scarlett’s face dominated his thoughts.
He tried calling her again. Sull off. The dread and suspicion in his gut began to spread like rot.
“What the hell is going on, Scarlett!”
He immediately called his former assistant, begging him to go to the asylum and check on Scarlett personally
He hung up and walked out, only to see Ruby standing on the balcony, on the phone.
He didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but her voice drifted over.
“Relax. He’s wrapped around my finger. Heard I was suicidal‘ and came running back Scarlett? Ha. I drove her away ages ago. I got people on the inside at the nuthouse. She’s probably being tortured right now…”
Then, she chuckled.
“I’m not sick, you idiot. It’s just an act to trick Cormac. Some famous psychologist -he can’t even tell I’m faking it!”
