He Lost Me to His Best Friend novel Chapter 24

The woman sitting in front of her was Dawn's biological grandmother, yet there was not a shred of affection on her face—only cold, calculating cruelty.

Even though she had been married to Yardley for five years, Scarlett had paid for all her own expenses. Yardley had given her a credit card after their wedding, but Corinne had confiscated it the very next day.

Corinne had always guarded against Scarlett like she was a thief, terrified that Scarlett would steal the Flynn family fortune. And now, she was treating her own granddaughter with the exact same disdain.

A mocking smirk touched Scarlett's lips. "That's exactly what I wanted to talk to you about."

"I'll sign the divorce papers, but my daughter is getting every cent she is owed. Given Yardley's current net worth, asking for a fifty-million-dollar trust fund for my daughter isn't too much to ask, is it?"

Corinne slammed her hand against the armrest, her vision going black for a second. "Fifty million dollars? You have some nerve! Why don't you just go rob a bank?"

"Honestly, fifty million feels a bit low. The Flynn family has a massive empire and countless real estate assets. Throwing in a few commercial buildings and penthouses for Dawn is perfectly reasonable."

Corinne looked like she was about to pass out, her voice trembling with rage. "You... you're out of your mind! As long as I'm breathing, you won't get a single dime from the Flynn family!"

"I knew you had ulterior motives when you went after Yardley, but he was completely blind to it! Now you're finally showing your true colors! Scarlett, this is the day I've been waiting for!"

Triumphant, Corinne stood up and waved her phone in the air. "Did you think you were the only one who knew how to record a conversation? I just recorded every single word you said, Scarlett!"

"I'm sending this to Yardley right now so he can see you for what you really are!"

"You..." Corinne's brow twitched violently. "Aren't you afraid Yardley will see you for who you really are?"

Scarlett let out a soft laugh. It was true. For the last five years, she had worked tirelessly to prove one single thing to the Flynn family: she had married Yardley for love, not his money.

In the past, she would have rather died than bring up money with anyone in the Flynn family, especially Yardley. She had been terrified he would misunderstand her intentions and view her as a gold digger who had schemed her way into wealth.

That was why she had worked herself to the bone for five years, desperately hoping to earn their approval. But in the end, she realized that her blood, sweat, and tears had earned her absolutely nothing. All she had to show for it was a broken body and a shattered ego.

Now, she just didn't care anymore. Being a gold digger didn't sound so bad. If she couldn't have love, she would at least walk away with a massive nest egg. She had fought tooth and nail to board the Flynn family yacht, and now that she was about to jump ship with her daughter, she'd be damned if she didn't take her fair share after sacrificing five years of her youth.
