Right before Sylvia and Julian were supposed to tie the knot, the Croft family had caught wind of rumors regarding Sylvia and Yardley. Their attitude had turned instantly frosty.
To ensure the merger through marriage went smoothly, Yardley was forced to publicly declare his relationship with Scarlett and marry her immediately.
Corinne had watched the sham for five years. Yardley's treatment of Scarlett wasn't abusive, but it was far from affectionate.
Otherwise, why would he make her work her entire pregnancy, and fail to be present for the birth and her postpartum recovery?
If he didn't love her, why wouldn't he just end it?
Scarlett had only given birth to a daughter anyway. Whether she took the baby or left her behind, the Flynn family legacy remained untouched.
Corinne was completely baffled. Meanwhile, Yardley stormed out of the study and left the house without another word.
Watching her son walk away, Corinne was consumed with anger and anxiety.
Five years. He kept dragging his feet on the divorce. If Scarlett had delivered a son, Corinne might have tolerated it, but it was a girl. If this marriage didn't end, her dream of having a grandson was slipping away.
Watching Sylvia's son grow more adorable and chubby by the day only fueled her desperate craving to hold her own grandson.
Corinne had birthed three daughters before finally having Yardley. Her obsession with male heirs ran deep.
The arrogant text from Scarlett only solidified Corinne's burning desire to see the marriage destroyed.
She turned and headed back to Sylvia's room. Sylvia had just woken from her nap.
Corinne approached the bed.
"Sylvia, are you feeling better? Did the ginseng tea help you rest? You need to prioritize your recovery."
Sylvia looked around the room, her face dropping when she realized Yardley wasn't there. She grasped Corinne's hand tightly.
"Aunt Corinne, did Yardley leave again? Did he go find Scarlett?"
Corinne sighed. "I have no idea what spell Scarlett has over him. I told him to divorce her, and he said it was impossible. If he keeps stalling, all the elite heiresses who had their eye on him will be married off!"
