Chapter 3
He slowly looked up at me.
His eyes swept over my swollen cheek, completely emotionless.
“I lost my temper for a second.”
Then he pulled some anti–inflammatory gel from the first aid kit and held it out to me, totally ignoring what I’d just said about divorce.
I didn’t take it.
I noticed Preston didn’t even say “sorry.”
His hand hung there in the air for a moment, then he tossed the tube on the table.
‘You were the one in the wrong here. Being dramatic about it just makes things worse.”
Those words hit me like ice water.
That’s when it finally clicked.
Preston had always acted like he was doing me some huge favor just by being with me.
So he’d never apologize to me. Never consider my feelings.
And he definitely didn’t give a damn about anything I had to say.
Even after I caught him letting my son call another woman “mom,” he couldn’t be bothered to explain himself.
‘d always thought we were equals. That we at least respected each other.
What a joke.
Victoria sighed dramatically.
Honey, I’m fine. Don’t be mad anymore, okay?”
hen she quickly covered her mouth like she’d made some terrible mistake, looking at me all apologetic.
Oops, sorry. I’m so used to saying that in front of the kids, you know? Don’t take it personally.”
Little ones need stable parental figures to develop properly. I’m sure you understand.”
almost laughed at how fake she was.
He has a real mom. I’m taking him home with me, so you can drop the act.”
Victoria’s eyes instantly filled with tears.
Chapter 3
“I’ve spent seven years raising him! He’s like my own child now. You can’t just take him away!”
“Do you even know what his favorite food is? Which subjects he hates? Do you know which girl in his class always wants to play house with him? You don’t know anything about him. What kind of mother does that make you?”
She paused, then turned away like she was trying to be strong.
‘Sorry, I didn’t mean to lose it. I just don’t think you’re cut out to be a mother.”
Preston rubbed her back gently, his voice all soft and caring.
You didn’t say anything wrong, baby. Don’t cry.”
‘No matter what anyone else says, this family and that boy will only ever have one mom and that’s you.”
