Of course, once Mike started draining every last drop of Trevaris' divine soul energy, the latter would probably regret ever volunteering. By then, Mike could only hope no one accused him of child abuse.
The array required to incorporate the underworld's power, and Mike, already attuned to part of the Ghost Gate's energy, was the perfect person for the job.
As for Shannon and Benjamin, there wasn't much they could contribute at this stage.
Rather than wasting time standing by, it made more sense to focus on rebuilding their strength. Only by returning to their former power could they hope to play a meaningful part in freeing Velquin's soul from the Cavern of Calamity.
Each of them had something only they could do, something they were best suited for. That was the point of division of labor.
Standing at the edge of the Cavern, Shannon and Benjamin each sent a trace of golden light into the seal.
Immediately, the fiery net suppressing the malice began to glow faintly gold. Golden light wove itself with phoenix flame, making the barrier look even more untouchable.
As if in response, a small fire-colored phoenix could be seen gliding within the net, flickering in and out of view.
Benjamin stared at that little phoenix, and for a moment, he was pulled back to the first time he had met Velquin.
Back then, Velquin had been waiting for Lucan. But to Benjamin, Velquin was just… Velquin—his dearest friend.
"Velquin," he muttered, "we await your return."
They would all be waiting for Velquin's return and for his soul to come back whole.
Beneath the net, the little phoenix paused for just a moment. Then, with a sudden flare, it grew slightly larger, as if in silent reply.
Then came the sound—the familiar phoenix's cry.
The phoenix soared through the flames, cutting across the web in a swift arc and dancing through the seal.
