Those two adults glared at Elizabeth and her group like they wanted to cut them down with their eyes. Their looks screamed contempt and raw, self–righteous rage.
The man took a step forward, voice like ice. “So you’re the ones who hurt my son and tried to extort him?”
He had no intention of letting this go.
The woman’s glare felt like poison, her face twisted in disgust.
She looked them up and down, taking in the grime and the trash–stained clothes, and her lip curled like she’d stepped in something foul.
She pinched her nose and shoved her finger so close to Elizabeth’s face, it nearly poked her, before she started shrieking.
“What kind of filthy vermin crawled out of this dump? You bottom–feeders think you can touch my son? Just look at you–pathetic! You’re nothing but trash scavengers. Your hands stink. What, you get bored of living and decided to pick a fight with us? You steal from us too? You’re so desperate you want to end up in jail?”
Spit flew as she ranted, each word nastier than the last. “Now! Right now! Get on your knees and apologize to my son! Then stand there and let him hit you back until he feels better. If not, I’ll make sure you all rot in a cell for the rest of your lives!”
Peter saw how ugly things were getting and gritted his teeth, ready to take the blame. “I hit him! It had nothing to do with Ms. Elizabeth. If you want someone, come at me!”
Elizabeth yanked him back behind her, shielding him.
She looked the woman right in the eye, not an ounce of fear showing, and her voice sliced through the screaming like a blade.
“A rabid mutt whose leash slipped. Explains the foam at the mouth. You look human, but not even animals would stoop this low. At least animals keep their pups from biting strangers. You, though, let your crotch goblins loose and then throw a fit when someone puts them in their place. You ought to be grateful we did your job for you. Instead, you’re out here throwing a tantrum.”
Her words landed with ruthless clarity. “So what if I hit them? I did the world a favor teaching your nasty little accidents a lesson. Maybe next time, you’ll keep your disguises on a little tighter. If you can’t even manage that, don’t come here acting like you’re better than anyone.”
The woman shook with fury, her face twitching. “You little brat! How dare you talk to me like that?”
The man’s face went dark, patience gone.
He rolled up his sleeves, showing off thick arms, and roared, “You think you’re clever, don’t you? I’ll show you what happens to mouthy kids like you!”
He swung a fist right at Elizabeth’s face, the air full of tension.
Elizabeth’s eyes narrowed. She braced herself, ready to show him just who he was messing with
Suddenly, a voice rang out, sharp and desperate. “Stop!”
Someone barreled out from behind Elizabeth, arms spread wide, blocking the punch with their own body.

She looked pale from nerves, but her eyes blazed with resolve as she shouted with all she had, “Dad!”
Mick Conte froze, his entire body jolting. He stared at Tasha like he was looking at a ghost.
For a second, shock and confusion played across his face.
Then his brow furrowed, and his eyes filled with irritation, not joy.
“Tasha? Weren’t you and your mom exiled? What are you doing here?”
His words hit Tasha like a slap. She trembled, face going white as a sheet.
Mick’s wife, Mandy Conte, shrieked like someone had stepped on her toes. “Mick! That really is the brat? How did she get back? You better not even think about bringing her home! I will never let that little criminal set foot in my house! If she so much as tries, I’ll dump her in foster care!”
