“I can take care of it for you!” James said, his voice getting all friendly. “I’ll haul it away for free and get it destroyed at a proper waste site. You know how it is–dealing with agricultural waste is a hassle. Lots of paperwork, strict rules. I’ve got connections. I can handle it all in one go. Saves you the trouble, right?”

The office went quiet for a moment.

Marcelino had been under a lot of pressure lately.

His farm wasn’t big, but it had been passed down through three generations. They stuck to more traditional farming methods and crops, and in the nearby star sectors, they were known for consistent quality and unique flavors, especially their root vegetables and leafy greens.

But over the past year, things had gone really bad.

A major agricultural corporation, Seafarm Group, had been trying to buy out or take control of smaller independent farms in the area to expand its monopoly.

Marcelino refused their buyout and “tech partnership” offer. So they started squeezing him from all sides.

The seed company he used to work with began sending worse and worse seeds.

Low germination rates. Unstable traits. It was obvious someone had messed with them.

His sales channels got blocked too–old customers started canceling orders after hearing from Seafarm Group.

“You’re right, James,” Marcelino sighed, his voice full of exhaustion. “Keeping those things really is-”

“Boss!” Miles couldn’t take it anymore. Forgetting all manners, he shoved the door open and rushed in.

Both men were startled. Marcelino looked at him, surprised by his flushed face and heavy breathing. “Miles? What’s wrong? Something happened?”

James looked annoyed at being interrupted, but quickly forced a smile. “Oh, Miles. I’m discussing important business with your boss.”

Miles ignored him and urgently said to Marcelino, “Boss, can… can you step outside for a second? It’s urgent. Really urgent!”

Marcelino frowned, but seeing how serious Miles looked, he turned to James. “Give me a moment. I’ll go check.”

The two stepped out into the hallway. Marcelino asked, “What happened?”

Miles fumbled with his wrist device, pulled up the Free Market post, and started explaining in a rush, “Boss, look at this! Seeds! Someone’s buying seeds for crazy high prices! Even bad ones, rejected ones–they want all of them! The price is really high! It’s not like what Mr. Bale said. We don’t have to pay to get rid of them; we can sell them! For a lot of money!”

Marcelino took the device, still doubtful, and quickly scrolled through it.

The more he read, the wider his eyes got. The exhaustion on his face slowly turned into shock. “Interstellar Tycoon? One bad seed for one fruit? H–how is that even possible?”

He’d run a farm for years. He knew exactly how ridiculous that value difference was.

But the hype in the post was real. The successful trades were right there.

“I feel like I’ve heard of this Tycoon Boss before… Oh! The one selling sweet potatoes for 900 stellar coins each!” Marcelino’s brain started racing.

A single sweet potato weighing about 10 ounces was being sold for 900 stellar coins, and was still in short supply. For their farm, that was simply unbelievable.

If all of this was real, then the junk the Seafarm Group had deliberately dumped on him in the warehouse… He suddenly remembered how helpful James had been just a second ago.
