Chapter 256 The Line Gets Longer

At noon, Mercury Plaza.

The sun was high, shining over the crowded plaza.

The line at Elizabeth’s stall wasn’t getting any shorter; if anything, with all the new faces joining in, it was stretching even further, winding almost all the way to the fountain on the other side of the plaza.

Even though she’d brought several times more stock than usual, she was still out there selling.

But there were also more customers than ever before.

On top of her usual loyal regulars, there were a ton of newcomers who’d been drawn in by the buzz on Starnet.

They all had different reasons for being there.

For example, Rhett Loward is a keyboard warrior. He was a young man with blackframed glasses and a pale face, standing in the middle of the line. His fingers were flying across his holographic screen as he scrolled through posts blasting the socalled soilgrown poison vegetables.” Sometimes, he would smirk, like he silently agreed.

He was only there to see the scam for himself. If he could get some proof, he even planned to write a harsher exposé and milk it for views.

A few other guys nearby, with their shifty eyes and hushed whispering, were clearly in the

same boat.

Some people just came to watch the show, curious to see if something grown in soil was actually edible.

Like Penny Callahan. She had been moving along with the line for almost half an hour. There wasn’t any impatience on her face, just curiosity and excitement.

She kept standing on her toes to look ahead, chatting with people around her. Hey, do you think her stuff is really that amazing? Starnet’s going nuts over it!

Someone on the Starnet told me it tastes really good and told me to try it. I want to see if it’s just hype.

She was the type who went wherever the excitement was. True or not, it didn’t matter; what

mattered was being in the middle of it and getting the inside scoopfirst.

Then there were influencers trying to ride the trend.

Like Viola Feyer. She was dressed to the nines, holding a highend streaming device with builtin filters and a selffollowing drone. She smiled brightly at the camera. Guys, see this? This is the stall run by Mrs. Hewitt. The lines are so long! And the drama online is wild, too! Today, I’ll check it out for you in person and taste it myself. Is it the real deal? Is it delicious or is it poison? Don’t forget to follow and send a little spaceship, and later I’ll do a giveaway with some mystery potatoes!

She moved carefully along the edge of the line. She kept a safe distance so she wouldn’t get pushed by excited fans or haters, but still made sure her camera caught how popular and controversial the place was.

Most people, though, were just curious passersby. Like Willy Levine, a programmer.

His coworkers kept recommending it, and Starnet kept pushing it to him, so he stopped by during lunch to take a look.

He was a practical guy who didn’t care about online drama. He had just heard the stuff might help with mental fatigue from long hours of coding. So, he joined the back of the line with an energy drink, thinking, I’ll try it. If it doesn’t work, at least I have some fruit.

The line moved slowly. The air was filled with the sound of people gossiping, questioning, and wondering.

The regular customers, especially those who had already bought something and stayed behind Elizabeth’s stall to show their support, took it all in.

Wallace and Matilda exchanged a look.

Then each of them picked up some strawberries.

Matilda cleared her throat, walked up beside the line, and smiled at the new faces.

First time here, right? You’re already waiting anyway. Come, try this! These are Ms. Schofield’s strawberriesjust picked, super fresh! No charge, just so you can taste them!she said loudly. Her voice was loud and full of confidence. Good or bad, sweet or souryou can’t just trust what people say online. You gotta taste it yourself, right?

Rhett froze. He instinctively wanted to refuse, thinking it might be some kind of trick. But the strawberries looked too good, and the smell drifted over. Before he knew it, he had taken

One.
