Chapter 404 Can We Pick These?
It wasn’t the mushy, sour, metallic–tasting paste from a can, nor the hard, flavorless resh fruit” that had endured long–dista transport.
The skin was so thin that it felt like paper, bursting open at the slightest pressure. Juice flooded out, rich and full, blending w delicate flesh. It was sweet, with just a hint of acidity sharp enough to wake every taste bud.
And suddenly, he recalled a childhood memory. It was so faint that it barely felt real. His grandmother fed him tomatoes that grandfather brought home from the farm where he worked.
Back then, he hadn’t yet been drafted by the kingdom, and his grandparents were still alive.
It had already been more than 20 years since he last thought about that taste.
“Captain Brawn…” Onyx’s voice tightened. “This tastes like something I used to eat when I was a kid.”
Objectively speaking, the tomatoes he ate as a child definitely couldn’t compare to the ones here. It was just that memory hac added a filter over the flavors of the past.
Owen glanced at Onyx and said nothing, only picking a few more clusters and stuffing them into his hands.
Leaving the vegetable cultivation area and walking another half mile east, the air gradually changed.
t was no longer the scent of straw and soil, but rather a sweet, slightly intoxicating, and windswept fruity aroma.
The fragrance was crisper than grapes, richer than tomatoes, with a faint, pleasant tang.
“We’ve reached the orchard,” Owen said.
Before them stretched an entire expanse of fruit trees, spreading across a gentle slope with no end in sight.
Low apple trees were lush with foliage, and branches bowed under the weight of abundant fruit. The bright red apples clustered together, glossy under the sunlight.
Further in, countless plump red strawberries peeked out between green leaves like rubies scattered across a green capet
Onyx and the others stopped again.
Even Baxter couldn’t maintain his usual calm this time.
He had seen the “special supply fruits” in the palace banquet halls Each one was meticulously selected, identical in size and shape, displayed under a mist of ice like distant luxury
But the fruits lay before him now were growing directly on branches. The sun facing sides were deep red to purple, shaded sides were still tinged with green. They were teeming, crowded, and vibrant enough to command hus attention
The scent of apples was overwhelmingly bold, while the strawberries added a gentler, wrapping sweetness
The two aromas intertwined, rushing aggressively into everyone’s breath with the wind
Beanie swallowed audibly, the sound loud enough for everyone nearby to heat.

Chapter 404 Can We Pirk These?
His eyes locked onto a heavily laden branch of red apples hanging low. He murmured, “Can… Can we pick these?”
Owen didn’t answer.
+10 Free Coins
He walked to a tool shed at the edge of the orchard, pushed open the half–closed wooden door, and dragged out a large wicker
basket.
After thinking for a moment, he pulled out a second, then a third.
The baskets were woven from rattan, edges worn smooth from years of use, stained with a dark patina. He dropped them at Onyx
eet.
‘Why are you still standing there?”
Onyx looked down at the baskets, then up at his captain.
Didn’t you want to pick some?” Owen said flatly. “The apples and strawberries are ripe. We were already planning to harvest a atch today. You came at just the right time. Don’t just stand around.”
He paused, then said stiffly, “If you fill the basket, that counts as helping. If not, you’re just slacking off.”
Before he even finished speaking, Onyx let out a cheer and shot forward.
le hoisted the basket like it was a rifle and charged into the apple orchard in quick strides, heading straight for the lowest–hanging ›ranch packed with fruit. He reached out, grabbed, and tossed apples straight into the basket.
He was picking so fast that the appies thudded dully against the rim of the basket, leaving faint fingerprints on the bright red skin.
Hey, slow down!” Baxter called from behind. “Don’t bruise them/”
‘It’s fine,” Owen said with a laugh. “If anything gets bruised, he can just eat them himself later. Ms. Schofield said this is our way of hanking you all for the long trip over. It’s our treat. As long as you don’t waste anything, you can eat anything ripe in the fields.”
Onyx just kept grinning like an idiot.
His face still had traces of earlier tears from crying in the cafeteria. His eyes were a bit red, but he was all smiles, bright and a little goofy.
“Ms. Schofield is so generous!” he cheered without even turning around.
Beanie was a beat slow. By the time he grabbed his basket, everyone else had already rushed into the orchard.
Panicked, his face went bright red. He stumbled after them, yelling, “Wait for me! Save some branches for me!”
Baxter didn’t join Onyx and the others fighting over the low apple trees instead, he cut over to the strawberry patch and crouched down, taking a deep breath over the rows of vivid red fruit
His picking was unexpectedly gentle He didn’t look like someone who handled weapons- more like a bomb disposal expert He carefully pinched the stem between his thumb and forefinger and gave it a slight twist. The strawberry came free cleanly, still cradling its green calyx like a jewel
“This is just too beautiful…” he murmured, unable to put it in the basket. He held it up to the light instead, studying it from every angle. Sunlight passed through the fruit, revealing fine seeds and a crystalline texture inside.
