Chapter 417 More Calls
Maverick didn’t dare guess.

“They asked me to ask you,” Luke said, his voice still carrying that same easy warmth, “who set the standard for ‘lacking transit value,‘ how that standard was determined, and whether it could be brought before the council for discussion. No pressure, of course. Just asking.”
The line went dead.
Maverick slumped in his chair and realized his palms were soaked through.
He’d barely reached for his water when his device lit up again.
No caller ID this time. Just a short text notification: “Fourth Military, Logistics Division. Jezemiah Foursquare.”
Maverick stared at it for a moment.
Why would someone from the Fourth Military be contacting him right now? Surely it wasn’t about that farming lane too.

He opened the message and read it.
“Mr. Jensen,” it began, “regarding the navigational lane application for Planet A001, I am writing to express personal concern. The Fourth Military previously engaged in procurement discussions with the leading farm on Planet A001, and their produce has proven exceptionally well–received within Military Command. If that farm is being subjected to unjust treatment, I find it deeply regrettable. Additionally, Commander Hawthorne of Military Command has been following this matter closely. I felt you should be
informed. Jezemiah.”
Maverick read it three times. By the end, the color had drained entirely from his face.
Jezemiah’s “personal” concern was more frightening than every phone call he’d fielded tonight combined.
The Fourth Military is looking into this?
And Commander Hawthorne of Military Command?
That was a central figure in Military Command, a person of enormous authority.
Someone like that is paying attention to a farm?
Because the food tastes good?
Or because…
Maverick couldn’t bring himself to follow that thought to its conclusion.
Any one of the five Military Command commanders could shake the entire Kingdom just by showing up somewhere. All five of them, if provoked, could level institutions.
And the only reason Maverick had denied Planet A001’s navigational lane application so easily in the first place was because one of those commanders had given him the order directly.
That person had patted him on the shoulder and assured him personally. If anything went wrong, they’d handle it.

And now?

The executive secretary of Angelide Group had come asking questions. A government senator had expressed concern. And now the logistics chief of Military Command had sent a message personally.
This had already grown far beyond what a minor bureau director could contain on his own.
Maverick’s hand trembled as he reached for his device, trying to pull up the contact for the Fifth Military’s commander.
They promised this was airtight.
They said it was just a small farm on a waste planet, that blocking the lane would go completely unnoticed by anyone who mattered.
His finger barely grazed the screen before the device lit up again.
When Maverick read the name on the incoming call, the room seemed to tilt.
Golemio Gravellion. Second Military. Director of Military Supplies.
He drew a slow breath and answered.
“Mr. Gravellion, at this hour…”
“Maverick, I’ll skip the pleasantries.” Golemio’s voice was flat and direct. “The navigational lane application for that farm on Planet A001. What happened there?”
Maverick’s mouth worked. “Well… there’s a review process…”
“A review process?” Golemio laughed, short and humorless. “Maverick, the Second Military placed an order with that farm last month. Three thousand apples. The soldiers loved them. Said they were the best thing they’d eaten since before the standard supply contracts went through. We haven’t even sent this month’s order yet, and you’re telling me that place ‘lacks transit value‘?”
The sweat on Maverick’s forehead thickened into a cold, miserable film.
“Mr. Gravellion, L…”
“Don’t worry about it. Just asking.” Golemio’s tone went flat again. “Military Supplies has no authority over navigational lane decisions. But if shipments we’re counting on suddenly can’t get through, I do need to know where the blockage is. You
blockage understand.”
The line went dead.
Maverick hadn’t even had time to wipe his forehead before the device lit up a third time.
Third Military. Logistics Chief. Squalo Goldenwind.
Maverick stared at the name on the screen and felt his hand start to shake.
“Mr. Goldenwind…”
“Mr. Jensen. It’s a pleasure.” Squalo’s voice was impeccably cordial. “Forgive the intrusion. I have just one question.”
“Of course, please, go ahead…”

The farm on Planet A001. The Third Military has an ongoing procurement relationship with them. We were planning to place an order the moment their navigational tane cleared.” Squalo paused. “We’ve now been informed that the lane was denied on the grounds of ‘lacking transit value was hoping you could explain how that value is assessed. I’m curious whether the things Military Command wants to procure are also considered to lack value.”
Maverick’s throat closed. Not a single word came out.
“Mr. Jensen?”
“M… Mr. Goldenwind, this may be a misunderstanding…”
“A misunderstanding.” Squalo’s laugh was smooth and light. “Well, that’s a relief. I said as much myself. A farm that both the Hewitts and Military Command are competing to work with simply cannot lack value. My apologies for the interruption, Mr. Jensen.”
The line went dead.
Maverick sat there holding his device, the whole room feeling slightly unmoored beneath him.
The Hewitts and Military Command, competing for the same farm?
Planet A001.
Why does that name feel so familiar right now?
Someone just…
He sat bolt upright, opened Starnet, and typed “Planet A001 farm” into the search bar.
The first result that loaded came from Starnet’s largest media platform. Posted thirty minutes ago.
