She got to her feet, dusted off her clothes, then walked to the crater and crouched to soke the broken stone with a finger.

Not bad at all.

Her eyes crinkled with happiness.

The rebound was even stronger than she’d imagined.

She stood up and turned to look at the ten ships sitting peacefully in the early morning tight, the smile at the corner of her lips growing deeper and deeper.

The Circle of the Immovable Warrior Monk. What you send out comes right back at you.

The harder the attack, the fiercer the rebound.

She’d set the formation into the outer shells of the ships. It wouldn’t trigger under normal conditions, only activating automatically the moment something struck it.

The energy source feeding the circle was those highgrade energy stones. She’d done a rough estimate earlier, and based on the consumption rate across ten ships, the stones had enough charge to sustain three full days and nights of continuous, heavyduty attacks.

Three days and nights.

She almost laughed at the thought.

Forget simulated Pirate vessels. Even the real thing showing up would be sent scrambling back in total confusion.

Elizabeth dusted off her hands and looked at the ten ships with a gleam of pure, satisfied cunning in her eyes.

So the Fifth Military wants to come and make trouble?

Let them come.

She genuinely wanted to see who ended up causing trouble for whom.

The morning light was brightening steadily, and distant sounds of movement drifted from across the farm as the new day’s work began. A thin thread of smoke curled up from the direction of the cafeteria. Ella had probably already started on breakfast.

Elizabeth yawned and rubbed at her aching arms, then turned and headed back.

She’d walked a short distance when she stopped and looked back at the ten ships.

The morning light fell across their grey, unremarkable hulls. They looked exactly the same as yesterday, completely unassuming, the kind of ships nobody would look at twice.

Nobody would ever guess that in the span of a single night, they’d become ten mobile fortresses.

Sealed like iron, solid like stone.

Elizabeth pulled her gaze away, a quiet smile still resting at the corner of her mouth, and walked slowly into the morning light

Over the next two days, Elizabeth handled the farm’s usual business during the day and drifted out to the landing port each evening to check on the stability of the formations.

The first time, she stood in front of the assault craft she’d tested with the stone and went over every inch of it with careful attention.

The circle was completely intact, and the energy stone consumption was negligible. Apparently that little experiment hadn’t even registered as a real challenge to the array.

She nodded with satisfaction and moved on to check the other ships.

The second evening, she brought a little something with her, an oldmodel laser pistol she’d dug out of the warehouse.

It was one of the defense weapons from the earlier procurement batch, not yet officially distributed, modest in power, but more than enough to run a test.

She stood in front of the largest midsize vessel, raised the pistol, took aim, and pulled the trigger.

A thin beam of light shot toward the ship. Three feet from the hull, the pale golden glow materialized again.

The beam hit the membrane without producing so much as a ripple, then rebounded at an even greater speed.

Elizabeth was already moving, twisting aside before it returned.

The beam skimmed past her shoulder and struck the ground behind her, leaving a scorched black streak across the surface.

She looked at the streak, then looked at the ship sitting there without a scratch on it, and laughed until her eyes narrowed to slits.

Perfect.

She holstered the pistol and dusted her hands together.

On the third evening, Elizabeth ran a final check across all ten ships.

The stones were in excellent condition, the formation patterns were stable, and the ten ships sat quietly in the night looking entirely ordinary, indistinguishable from any other ships in the port.

But she knew exactly what they were now.

She stood at the edge of the landing area, looking at them, and a thought surfaced. What was the name of the inspector Zaylee had mentioned?

She scrolled through her device records. Deon. A decorated officer from the Fifth Military.

When Desmond and the others found out, they’d given her a full rundown on his background. He’d come in second at last year’s military championship, losing to Cristian.

Elizabeth had laughed when she heard that.

Lost to Cristian, still bitter about it?

And now he’d been sent to inspect the farm of Cristian’s wife, looking to find something to gripe about?

She shook her head, and the smile on her face took on a playful, conspiratorial edge.

Fine.

If he was that eager to find fault, he was welcome to try.

She tilted her head up at the ten ships, and a slow, knowing curve settled as the corner of her mouth.

Across the farm, the lights on the training ground went dark.

The farm fell into complete quiet, waiting for the morning that was coming.

Elizabeth took one last look at the ten ships, turned around, and walked into the night.

Tomorrow, everything would become clear.

Morning sunlight spread across the landing pad of Tycoon Farm on Planet A001, laying a warm, pate gold across the newly built port.

Elizabeth stood at the front, with Desmond, Melton, Tiffany, Skylar, and the rest of her core team arranged behind her.

Everyone wore the farm’s standard uniform, a dark forest green worksuit with the Tycoon Farm emblem embroidered in clean lines on the left chest. They looked sharp and ready.

A black dot appeared at the edge of the sky, growing quickly until the silhouette of a midsize government vessel took shape.

The ship descended slowly, its thruster landing gear kicking up a ying of dust across the hardened surface before settling into the designated berth.

The hatch opened, and two separate groups came down the ramp.

The first group wore deep navy uniforms bearing the badge of the Interstellar Route Authority on their chests.
